Hello,

This is a phone recommendation request. I am currently a TracFone customer and rarely purchase minutes (every several months or yearly). I would like to upgrade to an Android phone with GPS. I was looking over the ZTE Valet. It has the latest version of Android of any of their phones (4.1).

Can anyone recommend a 'purchase minutes' style of phone from any carrier (ZIP 53545) with Android? I am not interested in monthly payments. The assistance is appreciated.

Thank you,

Ryan

Hello,

Does anyone have a suggestion for services that do not require monthly renewal? That is my goal. Some months the phone may only be used once.

Thank you,

Ryan

Thinking Strait Talk might be a good one. However they are owned by the company you are already with. Net10 is another but its also owned by the same company. You can buy the yearly minute plans rather than a day by day. Not sure how the day by day plans work with a BYOD sim or if its even possible.

I have a ZTE Valet. In Atlanta it uses the Verizon 3G network.
So far in this area I have had no signal problems at all
and the phone seems to be a great one for my needs.
I recommend this phone for the casual user.
It is a single core and has 512K RAM
so if you need more power... go for another phone.
I feel this is the right mix for Android/no contract
and very cheap to own.
Got mine off Amazon for $75 via Amazon Prime.
Triple mins/text/3G data for life.
The 1 year of service/400 mins (x3)
is the next plan I am going to purchase.
Tech Support was very responsive in my opinion.

Over all very impressed with how cheap and good this
cell phone is!

Do any other carriers allow minutes to roll over to the next month? I don't want to stay with this lack of options if it isn't necessary. I have been researching some other models for a BYOD.

Several people mentioned unlocked phones. I am hoping TracFone supports something like a Huawei Premia Huawei Device USA - Huawei Premia 4G or Vitria Huawei Device USA - Vitria . The Valet would be cool. It would be great to find something with a Snapdragon S4. Anyone have experience?

Thank you,

Ryan

Hello,

There is new information. TracFone says 'any CDMA phone.' I looked over Phone Finder - search for a phone by feature - GSMArena.com and it recommends many phones. The search selected: Available, O/S: Android, At Least: v4.0.x Now, CPU: 1.5GHz, RAM: 1GB, Display: 1920x1080p, Any Touchscreen, Camera and Video Required, GPS Required and Wi-Fi Required. It yields 66 phones (clickable). Here is a different site. Does anyone have recommendations or know which have CDMA? I know of the HTC One.

Thank you,

Ryan

The Verizon Moto G is a CDMA phone, and it's only $99 off-contract. Not sure if you would be allowed to use it on another carrier though

UJ95x,

That is a cool looking phone. The display is 720p. I will keep searching.

Thank you,

Ryan

Yup, a really good phone. Best value for a phone in my opinion, even more than the Nexus

My biggest problem with the Verizon CDMA Moto G is they don't seem to allow activation on a pay-as-you-go plan. They only have expensive monthly plans as an option. Officially.

All Verizon prepaid phones are like that.

Must be used on prepaid for six months in order to be used on post-paid.

Hello,

That is true. There is no way to attain the Moto G CDMA. Verizon wants $60 per month for their lowest plan. What a rip-off.

There is a way, just not financially feasible. :)

Not necessarily. I have had Verizon prepaid phones on a daily plan, as well as a true pay-as-you-go prepaid plan.

How long ago was this? And was the device used on prepaid for at least six months?

I had a RAZR V3cpp (prepaid) on my postpaid plan. Verizon supposedly closed that loophole shortly after releasing that prepaid phone.

Does it have to be CDMA? Airvoice wireless (GSM; AT&T mvno) has a $10 plan 250 minute 500 text and the balance does carry over if you renew. I had a good experience with them. If BYOD they only sell standard sized sims. You have to get a micro or nano pre-cut (or cut it yourself) off of eBay.

Hello,

TracFone doesn't require any purchase aside yearly. Your number stays active for the time frame. They have double and triple minutes / data for life. If I can stay with them I will. Their BYOD plan is gaining momentum. The bottom line is they don't say that Sprint devices are not allowed and they really only take phones for Verizon and one other network. All of this is from the 10-page thread on their forum. I am thinking of switching on the grounds the Moto G looks great and the CDMA version is unavailable without contracting (see my posts on Motorola's board). Ting and a few other providers have some decently cheap plans for GSM (~$5/m + minutes). It is undecided.

Thank you,

Ryan
