Pay who for the international service?

I thought international users - or, at least those who work outside the U.S. for extended periods of time - usually preferred to buy a sim card from one of the local wireless carriers and insert it into their phone. Do you guys think that those cards would work in this phone?

This quote almost makes it sound like Verizon Wireless is somehow involved in providing the international service, which I assume would be more expensive:

DROID PRO is also a global-ready Android smartphone, allowing customers to enjoy wireless voice service in more than 220 countries and data coverage in more than 200 countries.
Thanks.

My blackberry tour was a worldphone under verizon. Came with a verizon sim. Either you could use their sim card in the 200+ countries that it worked in, or you could have them unlock the sim so that you could use it with other carrier's sims. Verizon unlocks the sims for free, just have to call.

As long as your account is in good standing (you don't owe them overages/previous bills)and the phone is currently active on your line, all you need to do is contact Verizon global support (the number will be in the box) and they should unlock it for your no problem.

This is what I did to my Tour when I had it. there are no fees, and no penalty. Verizon does offer international roaming, but it's pricey. It's only worth it if you NEED your number

Verizon uses the Vodafone network to Roam GSM, but the roaming fees are steep.

If they will let you unlock it, get a local SIM.

Now that I think about it. You could probably call forward your number to a Google Voice number and have both your number and the local number.

Verizon also has some excellent International plans involving unlimited data and (IIRC) calling using your minutes at no extra per-minute charge (I never call anyone overseas so don't quote me on that part!). It may not be appropriate for long term use, but if you're going on a trip for a week or a month the price of the International Roaming plans may be well-worth the investment compared to trying to find a prepaid SIM and realizing how expensive data can be overseas.

GV would work for me, but this will be for someone else who couldn't handle the complications.

Thank you . . . I'll look into the unlimited data & possibly calling. I forgot to consider data charges til now (could have been a big mistake).
