Personalised ringtone is causing message tones to ring as well

Hi all,

I'm new here and hope someone can help. I've done a search to no avail.

I have a HTC one running Android version 4.2.2 with HTC Sense version 5.0

I have set customised ringtones for each of my family members which works fine. However, when this person sends me an sms or message on whatsapp, the phone will play the customised ring tone for that person rather than a normal sms tone. This is really annoying because I think they're calling me, but it's just a message.

Is there any way to not have the personalized ringtone play when I receive a message? I've tried all different settings and searched everywhere and can't find any references to this problem.

Any help would be much appreciated.
