Phone does not notify me when I have a notification

After the lollipop update whenever I get a message the phone screen does not "wake" and tell me. Also the LED notification light does not change either.
It is very troublesome to always having to keep pressing the lock button so I can check for message.
Can someone please help me by telling me how to make my phone light up the screen when I get a text message?

You have two choices with the new lollipop update (neither which I like).

• 1-All notifications come on your lock screen, which means anyone can look at your phone and read what notifications you have.
• 2-No notifications on your lock screen.

I'm not sure about the notification light. Mine does't work.

You do need your sound on to let you know that you have notifications. I think that is an option, without ringing, but I don't want every junk e-mail notification or sale text to beep at me, so I have mine on Silent Priority for my alarm clock and check it every now and then.

Ok that makes sense. All I want is for my screen to light up whenever I get a text.
