Phone Doesn't Display Notifications When Locked

Hello! I recently got a new phone. I've never used an android before i've always used an iphone. The phone is a Vodafone Ultra Smart 6 running Android Lolipop 5.1.
Thing is when i get a text, email, fb notifications they dont wake up the screen so i dont know they are there, i have to turn the screen on to check. I have tried many apps such as Glimbsy Notifications, screen notifications and none of them work.
I really need to find a fix for this since it really effects the phone usage!
Any suggestions?

I believe only text messages will light the screen up, everything else will use the LED

I had the same issue. In the end I installed a 3rd party app - Slidelock - to handle notifications. Other apps are available of course.
