anyway of keeping this pile of crap phone from dimming automatically?
I have automatic brightness off, auto adjust screen power off and it still will dim to barely on.

Pile of crap phone? Maybe that's just frustration talking, but I think you'll get some disagreement with that statement.

Anyhoo ... I'm betting that this is happening to you only while you're browsing the web using the stock browser? If so, the browser has it's own brightness slider separate from the phone brightness. Open the browser and edit the settings to disable auto-brightness.

If I'm wrong and it's happening everywhere else, my only guess is you have a defective light sensor or some other hardware issue, and should take it in and have a tech look at it.

You're right, it's not that big of a piece of crap phone, just a pile of crap OS.
and no, it's not in the browser. The system brightness slider will just go to 0 for no reason.

Do you think you might be sliding your finger across the status bar inadvertently?

+1.......got the phone a week ago and mine dims to 0 several times a day. Not happy about it

Also how do you get it not to dim right before it auto locks. Every time I search the web that dimming is annoying

how much battery do you have left when this happens? The reason I ask is because when I had power save mode set to kick in at fifty percent I sort of remember the phone never going back to normal either after changing it or turning it off. Just a thought. Try checking if you have it set up and what you have it set at.. Maybe uncheck it and pull the battery. If I'm way off base I apologize.

I may be a little late on this post but I have had a similar problem but theres good reasoning behind it. My screen would slowly dim off over use. I use my phone for nearly all of my web browsing, forum trolling, and internet use. After time, the phone will heat up. I run 100% brightness most of the time. My screen starts dimming. Come to find this thing will autodim for the sake of protecting the phone. That, I do not mind at all!

If you have auto brightness unchecked, the status bar acts as a brightness slider. It is actually quite easy to change brightness to minimum by accident.
Either turn auto back on or recognize when you accidently change it and adjust your habits accordingly.
Like Steve said "you're holding it wrong"

Lol nice. Yeah OP each OS has its flaw.. If software was perfect for every single person we wouldn't need any developers except for a few.

As to your issue though something has to be messing with it. Are you rooted or stock? I am rooted and I can have auto brightness on or off and I don't have an issue.

This is awesome...I was reading this thread as this happened to me the other day. And damn, if you long press the status bar and wait for the pull down image to go away you can slide the brightness anywhere you want it to go.

I like the fun things I learn on this website!!

Thanks holtcg...:)

The screen dims when the phone gets warm, next time it dims on you go to the setting and it will say that the phone is to hot.

This isnt exactly true...the stock browser does have a screen brightness under settings, but this is linked directly to the phone brightness. So changing this changes the phone settings in general. This issue is really starting to annoy me because I cant read outdoors anymore. It only occurs when:

  1. I use the stock internet browser
  2. I read emails

There are no settings which I can find that are causing this. The phone didnt do this with the stock android version when it was first purchased but after google did the update around end 2012 is when this all started.

In addition to "Auto-Brightness", there is one other "tucked away" setting that you might try setting on/off. If you go to Settings > Display, scroll all the way to the bottom of the page (in Jelly Bean) and you will see a (new) option for "Auto Adjust Screen Tone" with the description... "Save power by adjusting screen tone according to analysis of images". I believe this is checked ON by default. You might try unchecking it to turn it OFF and see if that helps.

Bonus Tip: Just above that setting, you'll also see an option to "Display Battery Percentage" in the notification area. I've pointed this out to several friends, who didn't realize the option was there. It's very handy, as a decently sized percentage number appears right next to the battery icon. In previous version (GB & ICS), a microscopic and virtually illegible percentage figure would overlay on the battery icon, making it almost useless.

Good Luck!

I think you nailed it drk65
my phone was dimming with the internet then I turned off power saving mode and it stopped. I may have adjusted something else(what you stated above) not sure. turned power saving mode back on a few days ago forgot about that problem but it hasn't done it

I had this problem and it seems the brightness slider and the one buried within the Display settings under Brightness actually maintain a separate value. So what was happening to me, I'd have full brightness on my display, I'd turn my display off, then back on and it would be dim. Very frustrating. But the problem was that in Settings | Display | Brightness I was at 0 and on my drop down menu I was at 100% brightness. The drop menu is a quick adjustment for your "session" and the one in Settings is what your phone will default to when it returns from a call or gets activated with the Home button, etc. Just go into Setting and make sure you've got it at 100%.

Isn't it amazing how it's always the users fault and not the technology.
I am stuck with a phone that dims continuously no stopping it. Also when I bought it I was not only lied too about the contract but about everything except the price of the insurance on this phone.
Now I'm told I'm stuck with it and a bill I can't afford for two long years.
YEESH.

Welcome to Android Central! It'd help to know more details, considering that you're posting in a thread that was started almost 7 years ago about an ancient phone. Which phone do you have? I assume you already turned off automatic brightness, since that was mentioned in the post you quoted. Any power-saving modes turned on? Do you have a case or screen protector that might be interfering with the ambient light sensor (which is near the front-facing camera)?
