phone locking up - difficulty ending calls

I'm having issues when on the phone. (on the phone =phone call to a person) The screen goes black when holding the phone to my ear I guess so I don't face dial. But when I move the phone to press "end call" the screen remains black - I press power - volume - everything and still black for a few seconds like it's frozen. If the other person hangs up that will normally cure it. I'm using the Otter Box case with the plastic shell followed by the silcon rubbery sleeve - if I start to take the case off that normally unfreezes it. But my phone is not freezing at any other times and I consider myself pretty close to a power user - several games, internet, market, Launcher Pro Plus, circle launcher, Desktop Visualizer - Min. text, extended controls, and on and on and on. Again no other freezes or problems navigating the device and dozens of apps.

Was there something about a 5 second rule somewhere about maybe the lock screen replacement app I'm using and could that be it??

Any other ideas??

A work around would be to lock and unlock it. Sometimes mine does similar things. Hit the power button to lock, then again to unlock. I use a pattern lock, but that probably is irrelevant.

that's just it though - the power button or lock button is not working - so I can't lock and unlock - can't end call or anything else without taking the case off.

then I would have Verizon check out the device

it was a proximaity sensor issue as some lint got into those tiny two holes at the top - if it happens to you try making sure you have an extra clean case and no dirt/lint in places at the top
