Phone not always notifying me of emails or texts

It seems like the phone is not always vibrating or giving me a notification in the status bar when an email arrives. I also notice that if I'm in an app like calendar only a notification bar reminder comes up and the phone doesn't vibrate.

Is the phone supposed to work this way?

My email notifications stopped workin recently, gave me an error message saying check settings in browser when trying to login. So i did to no prevail. I deleted the account from my phone and logged out from the browser (hotmail) then reconnected my account and notifications started again. Dont know if it may work for your S3.
