Anyone else having problems with the phone screen blanking out and not responding to any commands once a call is initiated?

One verizon rep recommended installing ATK as a way to manage memory usage for this problem and the email hanging problem I was also experiencing. It seemed to work for awhile, but the problems eventually resurfaced. A second rep replaced the phone but the screen issue reappeared even before I've fully restored all my data.

Any suggestions?

So your screen won't come back on if you pull the phone away from your face or hit the power key? Sorry but that has never happened where it won't come on at all, sometimes I have to hit the power key and that always works. Good luck

Right, I'm sometimes unable to select speakerphone when receiving or initiating a call, for example. Doesn't even need to be near my face at any point. The screen goes blank and won't respond to any virtual or physical buttons - only the other party hanging up or a battery pull.

Other times it blanks out for a few seconds and then comes back. Other times it works properly.

I had that once, where the screen just refused to come back. A battery pull was the only solution. Couldn't turn the phone off, since holding the power button doesn't even do anything. That was with the 1st Droid I had. I ended up getting it replaced for Wi-Fi issues as well, and this one doesn't do it at all.

Sorry!

Every since the 2.0.1 update mine has been giving me the same problem 90% of the time. I have my own workaround for it though... I just slightly open my keyboard just before hanging up and it brings it back to life. Then when it hangs up it does not get stuck on a blank screen.

I was going to take it back, but decided not to for two reasons. 1) Since a software update caused it maybe the next software update will fix it. 2) If I take it back I may get a phone with another problem and at least I know how to work with this issue (my first one would not play video... I have seen people post about other horrible issues).

There is a sensor in the (I think) upper right corner of the screen. The sensor is supposed to be blocked by your face and thus turn off the screen to conserve battery - You mentioned something "memory" conservation and task killers. Screen blanking out during calls is BATTERY conservation system tool, not MEMORY issue.

Anyhow, your issue may be hardware or saftware or a defect. Try adjusting the way you hold the phone. I had a problem with my thumb wrapping around and covering the light sensor and tricking the phone into thinking it was up against my face. This might be your issue.

RE: task killer apps sugested by VZW reps, to each his own. However, search the forums and read up on this. A bit of debate is being had regarding the effectiveness / damage of task killer apps - be informed.

It shouldn't be a proximity sensor issue as it sometimes happens when holding the phone down on front of me, initiating a call or answering one in the midst of browsing, messaging, or working with spreadsheets, for example.

This issue existed prior to the 2.0.1 upgrade but back then the phone at least would respond to the volume keys by waking up. I hate the thought of exchanging the phone again considering the time spent transferring data and restoring settings, but it looks like that may be my only option if no one else has a suggestion.

Dang, I thought it would be the proximity sensor. That sucks if you have to exchange. I hope someone can help with this.... ANYONE??
