Phone stolen - what are my options?

So my son apparently had his LG Optimus V stolen today so my wife had the it deactivated, phone number transferred to a new phone, and the account activated there. I am a little concerned that, even though that old phone is no longer activated, it's still usable and whatever personal data that might be installed, is still visible/accessible. Are there ways to have the phone remotely wiped, or perhaps to track it somehow? For example there is Gmail, Yahoo Mail, the Play Store, and a few other things set up, and it concerns me that someone with wireless can still cause problems via WiFi connection to the Internet. There was so little space on the phone I didn't even think to install any security software. Any ideas would be appreciated. The phone was stock and not rooted or otherwise customized. Thank you!

We changed all password information on all apps that were on the phone and we really only had a few pictures on it, but hopefully there isn't a security issue, still. I'll have my wife call Verizon today and see what other options they are aware of.

The Optimus V is a phone on Virgin Mobile. You might want to contact them instead of Verizon.
