Phone upgrade options

I will be eligble to upgrade my phone beginning next month. I am trying to decide if an upgrade from the Epic to the Galaxy SIII is good. Considering the problems with the GPS on the Epic and the slow software updates, I've been considering an HTC phone.

I know that the HTC Evo 4G LTE has been out for a while, so I wouldn't want to get a phone that might not see any software updates.

The galaxy nexus seems like it might be good since it doesn't have all the pre-installed applications and updates would come directly from Google.

Should I consider the Galaxy S3 or should I hold off on the update and wait for another phone to come out?

You wouldn't be making a bad move going either direction, SGSIII or HTC.

Both will soon be running official Android 4.1.x JellyBean OS..

I don't think users are having the same GPS problems like on the Epic 4g and this was limited also, my Epic 4g had a spot on GPS without ever having to toy with anything.

And just want to mention that the Nexus (sprint/verizon) does NOT get its updates from Google directly, you're still subject to your carrier sending out the update. Of course, you can always root/rom the latest as there is a HUGE developer following.

All three are slated for the JB update, with the Nexus one being rolled out starting yesterday (9/6/12 and rolling over an 8 day period). Both HTC and Samsung have officially stated that JB will be coming, with no specific dates. The Nexus has a good shot at getting KLP shortly after that comes out, based on the fact that the prior Nexus S4g is getting JB this week also.

If you NEED that keyboard, the Motorola slider that just came out, is said to not have a locked bootloader, and is a pretty compelling upgrade too.

What is the update path likely to be for the Galaxy S3? I know it is starting out with ICS and JellyBean is coming. How long will the phone be supported for updates?

OEMs agreed to support devices now at least 18 months I believe after release with updates to the latest (if hardware allows) OS.

We know the GS3 will see JellyBean and if KLP (Key Lime Pie) rolls out in the next 12 months I could see that happening as well.. Either way your favorite developers will keep them in the loop either via Cyanogen Mod ROMs or other independents...

One other thing I am wondering in regards to either the HTC Evo 4g LTE or the Galaxy s3 is how they handle application sorting. With the Epic, new applications are listed by newly installed rather than in order by name. I think it's easier to find applications when they are in order by name.

Are you talking about when you hit the application icon and all your apps are listed on the different pages? There was an option to sort them alphabetically if I remember correctly.

Yes, I am referring to the applications that are listed when you press the applications icon. I know that the apps can be sorted, but on the Epic, the apps have to be resorted everytime a new app is added. I was hoping that the galaxy s3 or the evo 4g lte would sort them automatically.

I just installed an app to test this and it placed it in the correct alphabetical spot.

So then why is it that everytime I install an app, I have to do the following: menu|edit, menu|sort, menu|save. For instance, I installed GPS Test and rather than app being installed in alphabetical order, it was placed at the end of the application list (after YouTube). Samsung support can't explain why this happens, and I think it only began happening after the update from 2.1 to 2.2.

Sprint Galaxy Nexus already got an official update to 4.1.1. There is nothing confirmed for either the GS3 or One X anytime soon, but you can hope it doesn't take long. Me, I went Epic to Nexus, and after owning it a month, I will NEVER buy a non-Nexus ever again.
