ok...what I did is as follows.
last night I finally figured out how to root my phone with my mac, and was successful.
I got cwm to install using the one click method and installed the 2.1-2.2.zip using Braydons guide for mac users.
I could not use the one click push to push the rom to my sd card because my mac stopped recognizing my phone, so i figured out how to use the adb commands from the mac terminal to get the rom to my sd card...which I found when I went to install the rom in the sd card root directory as I expected. I chose the option to install zip from sd card. it said it was successful but also said that a file was not found, the update.zip. I looked up what the update.zip was and figured, maybe incorrectly, that I needed it and that I needed to apply sdcard:update.zip. So I did. It didnt work. It was about 4 in the morning and I had been working on it since about 11 so I was tired and pulled the battery to see what would happen. it takes be back to the voodoo lagfix recovery 2.5.1.x screen asking me if I want to reboot system.
So I posed my question on here before going to bed and gave up...frustrated as heck. Does that help you at all?
