Photo backup failed...is there a way to recover deleted files??

I am near hysterical at the moment. I needed to clear up space on my phone (Galaxy S5 Active) and bought an sd card. Moved the files over, no problemo. I checked and all the files were there. Deleted the photos from my phone (made double sure the pictures were on the sd card and I was selecting the photos stored on my phone and not the sd card.) All good. Did the same for the videos. When I went in to the sd card after deleting the videos...there was nothing. No pictures. No video. Nothing. I have NO idea why the photos and videos were deleted off the sd card but now they are gone from everywhere. PLEASE tell me there is some way to recover these files. Not only did I lose tons of amazing scenery, I lost all the pictures of my kids. I WOULD have put them directly onto a computer, but the only "working" (term used loosely) one I have, for some reason won't acknowledge the phone connected to it.

I am slightly hopeful because the picture I have as my background is still there as the background....

Download free program called recuva for your computer, my wife erased every thing on mine on accident, was able to get most everything back.
