For some background I just factory reset my phone yesterday due to battery issues.
I downloaded 4 photos from an email I previously sent myself but when I went to my gallery to look at them they weren't there. I just so happened to click on the Recent tab and the photos were there as well as in a Downloads album. How do I get them to show up on the Pictures tab? I've never had this problem before and have restarted my phone several times but they stay the same.

Have you looked in the Photos, which is separate from the Gallery?

Hopefully these explain what I mean a bit more? That blue square is a photo I saved from an email attachment. It shows under Recent but not Pictures

Did you tap the icon and confirm this? Out of the box, it is set up to have a copy. If you haven't 'set it up', it should be stock and have a copy.

Yes, when I tap it it shows some really old photos, nothing current, then asks me to allow permissions for it.

Using a file manager app, look in the directory called /Download. Are the photo files there? If so, see if there's also a file called .nomedia in that directory -- if so, then delete that file. Or, you can copy the photo files to some other directory, like /Pictures.

I figured it out, I think. I changed my download location to internal storage in Chrome and that seems to have fixed the issue and the photos are showing up properly now
