I just read an article on a new QI charger called Pi, in which you don't have to actually place your charger on it.
According to their website:

Great concept and I hope it actually works anywhere close to what they claim. Since everyone in my house (four of us) can charge wireless, I will probably invest in one as a kind of central charging hub. Plus it would be great for friends/other family who have phones that can do it as well.
