Picking the best ROM

My phone has been freezing and is in need of a factory reset, so I figure I might as well just root and flash if I have to erase everything.

Here is what I am looking for in a ROM.
-Sense (I would prefer as close to stock as possible. what are odds of official 2.2 rom leak but rooted?)
-Froyo (JIT is a must)
-New Google apps must work (voice search, crome2phone, etc)
-Wireless tether (so kernal update needed?)
-Being able to apply some mods found on XDA (remove location/clock/etc in status bar)

browsing XDA doesn't seem efficient considering there are just random threads for various ROMs but no major consensus on different types.

Skyraider 2.2 Sense is your best beat as of right now. Easy to install, everything works etc. You will need to flash the leaked OTA to install any fully working 2.2 ROM. I suggest you get at least the 8/1/2010 leak which is baseband 2.05.00.06.11.

Of course the best way, since everyone's tastes are different is to start trying all of them find the one that works best for you! It doesn't take all that long. If you are rooted get titanium backup and rom manager and have at it. Once fully installed and going make a nandroid backup you can restore from which is much faster than hand reflashing everything. Good luck, you will become addicted.

whats the deal with using the leaked radio update? Since there was no corresponding official update I assume its been rolled into the froyo update. How will that affect ROMs for when the official update comes and something like Skyraider is based off of that?

Basically the onlything stopping me at this point is not trusting roms/radios based off of leaked/unofficial builds.

Allow me to second that.

I'll add that I haven't much played with any of the others.

I am using HTC-OTA-3-1.26.651.6-Final Froyo-Rooted-Odexed-netarchy-signed, Latest Radio (2.15.00.07.28) & WiMax, toastmod-4.0.3a-signed kernel and all is well.

You get:

-Sense (Stock)
-Froyo (Final Build)
-New Google apps work
-Wireless tether (so kernal update needed?) - Just make sure you find the latest tether (2.0.5 pre 7) or one that works for ya....my 2.0.5 pre2 is working great....
-Being able to apply some mods (haven't tried, but I am sure you can)

The kernel fixed the 3mp limit on camera. Woo hoo!

Anyone else?

Good luck.

Was it ported for the incredible? I thought Toastmod was the kernal for the Evo.. and you said "WiMax" in your post. He has an incredible, don't tell him stuff he doesn't need to hear.

They all are, you have to have a 2.2 radio, no offical released yet, to have a working camera. Simple as that. You can flash Skyraider 2.2 on top of the radio you have now but you will be sitting there with a none-functional camera and possibly some other side effects. Flashing ROMs isn't for everyone. I would suggest you do A LOT more reading before making a decision either way.

Be prepared to lose 30% battery overnight in standby if you don't charge. Every rom does it, i have tried them all. There are plenty of forums with threads claiming the same issue.

Starting Day @ running Skyraider 2.2, latest radio & everything. Anxious to see how the battery life holds up.

any explanation on it?

Really? I'm experiencing 4 hours better battery life on mine. Of course I don't leave mine off the charger overnight....hummm

Signal loss/ searching. The only other explanation is an app preventing sleep.

I lose about 10% max, overnight. Sometimes less.

Before my little tricks here and there to conserve battery, it was 15% tops, over an 8 hour period.

I concur on that, my phone MAX loses 5-10% overnight. I haven't had any emails just the normal background syncing going on tonight for the last 2 hours and my phone has only lost 1%. (This includes waking the screen to check if I got any new emails)

^^

I found that using the HTC email app and using the checking profiles has done WONDERS for battery life. You don't need your email while asleep so.... ;)

Another thing I have done is used setcpu to set my screen off time to 384/245 frequency.

Then there is the turning off of always on data.

...lots of little tricks you can do to get decent battery life from such a dinky little battery. The only real danger is signal loss. I honestly believe folks seeing the battery drainage they do on Froyo is due to the poor 2.05 radio. That things switches from 1x to 3G to no 3G to no signal, all the time (for me anyway).

I haven't used any trick. Just flashed a Froyo ROM with the 8/1 radio. I was using an undervolted kernel with 2.1 but haven't wondered there with 2.2 yet. I normally manage to place it on charge when I goto bed at about 30-45% and 14-16 hours under my belt. And my usage isn't that light, that normally includes at least 2 hours of web surfing and an hour of gaming. (Not to mention listen to podcasts, checking comps out with logmein ignition etc.) Froyo has been great for me. (I'm on a 1750 battery though)
