Pictures don't fully delete when deleted?

I just mounted my SD card to my computer via USB to put some pictures on my computer.

In the DCIM folder I noticed two folders. One titled "100MEDIA" which I found my camera shots in. But the other titled ".thumbnails" had every picture downloaded or shot, even ones I have deleted.

So how can you actually delete a picture on this phone to really end it's existence? I find this odd.

the thumbnails folder does not contain pictures you've taken. it contains smaller low res renderings of pictures. when you scroll through your gallery you have the grid view. that is your thumbnails.

you can delete them and it will just render the pictures that are in your gallery.

I get they are thumbnails. But why would the phone not delete the thumbnail when I tell it to delete the picture? It's like leaving a little smaller version of the picture behind.

because it deletes the picture...from the dcim folder. if you save 2 copies of the same word doc to your desktop then delete one. does the other one delete because it knows its a copy?

thats not how a file manager works

It's not completely the same, but think of the thumbnails as internet browser cache. You need to clear that separately.

But I am not saving two copies, the phone is making two copies, one a thumbnail for gallery viewing.

Is there anyway to clear it on the phone or do you need to hook up to a computer?

Sorry, things like this drive me nuts. When I delete something I want it gone.

You can do it from the phone if you have a file manager installed like astro or root explorer. Just navigate to the folder like you would on your computer.

Does this mean even if the picture was deleted. It still shows up under Gallery grid view?
