Pictures with flash enabled are darker

I don't understand why pics that I take in a normally lit room with the flash are darker than without a flash.

I'm not sure why they would be but I know I get way better pictures using a different camera app. I am currently using Camera Zoom FX but have also had really good results with Camera MX. The only thing is you can't launch them with the twist action and the app is a little slower launching but definitely better results.

Typically on cameras, if the flash is on, it opens the shutter for a shorter period of time. This results in crisper pictures, but if the flash doesn't have anything fairly close to the camera for light to bounce off of, then it can result in darker pictures, because it's letting light in for a shorter amount of time. If you take a picture of something a few feet away, does that object show up brighter than without flash?

What this guy said. Normally with dedicated cameras, the flash is bright enough to go several feet (depends on camera, my DSLR built in flash can do about 5-7 metres). With cell phones, the LED flashes are just not powerful enough to do that distance. Unless something is within 1-2 metres, it will make the scene darker for the reasons the above poster mentioned. If you get closer to your subject, you'll give your flash a chance to actually reach the subject and bounce back to the sensor in time to brighten the shot.
