Has anyone got this to work. Device manager shows device drivers are loaded but I get a hang after trying to start server or a can not start server messages depending on which rooting tool I try.

Try uninstalling then reinstalling the drivers. Also, sounds like you are using adb to root? If so, make sure adb is setup properly and and is recognizing the device.
