I'm really interested in the Target deal for the Pixel 2xl. It's advertised as free plus a $250 Target gift card.
I don't understand the $300 in bill credits that make it "free."
I am currently a Verizon customer and due for an upgrade so I am comfortable with having the new phone for 2 years.
With this deal, would I still have a monthly payment?

Chances are you'll get the handset free plus $300 of discount applied to your monthly bill, often only coming into effect after six months or a year. I can't confirm as I'm over in the UK, but that's probably how it works.

The phone is not free. You get a FREE $250 gift card

You get $300 off the regular price of a Pixel 2 XL of $849 when you sign up for a Verizon payment plan for 24 months. So, $549/24 = $22.87. Then you get a $250 Target gift card.

Yeah, nearly went with this deal as well but I don't shop enough at Target to make it worth it but it's a great incentive !

That's great! So you're paying $22.87 a month for the Pixel? How much a month for the IPhone?

The deal is:

Pixel 2 for $27.08/month for 24 months
Bill credit of $12.50/month for 24 months
Receive Target Gift Card worth $250

You end up paying: $14.58/month for 24 months for the Pixel 2.

Pixel 2 XL for $35.41/month for 24 months
Bill credit of $12.50/month for 24 months
Receive Target Gift Card worth $250

You end up paying: $22.91/month for 24 months for the Pixel 2 XL.

Bill credits stop when the phone is paid off which means in order to keep the $14.58/month price, you cannot pay off the Pixel 2 early.

For example:

In 12 months, you decide you want to use a Device Payment Plan on a Pixel 2 line for a new phone (for a Pixel 3). In order to do so, you'll have to pay off the Pixel 2.

You will need to pay $324.96 to pay off the Pixel 2 after 12 months. You'll lose out on $150 worth of bill credits. Instead of paying $349.92 for a Pixel 2, you'll end up paying $499.92, which is $174.96 + $324.96.

Not so bad if you factor in the $250 Target gift card, but still, these bill credit deals are the new two-year contract.

Pretty much. I am shocked T-Mobile still sends out MasterCards for theirs. I expect one day they will move to 100% bill credits as well. Carriers are learning the people can abuse / manipulate with pre-paid cards so they swap it to bill credits to get you to "lock in" .. Just like they did w/ those contracts :p.

Unfortunately, I checked around at a couple of Target stores and was told that the $250 gift card deal only applies to the 64 GB model of the Pixel 2 XL, not the 128 GB model, which I am seeking to replace my Moto X Pure Edition.

I didn't realize that. I bought the 64gb from them. Have you tried their website -- putting the 128gb in your cart to see if offer is included?

Yes. The Target website indicates that the $250 gift card offer also applies to the 128 GB Pixel 2 XL phone. But the fine print states that the offer is only valid if you purchase the phone from inventory in a store. I checked at two local Target Superstores, and by a stroke of lucky timing was able to speak directly with the manager who supervises the cell phone department for Target throughout this district. He confirmed that the gift card offer would only be applicable to phones that are in stock at the store, and that, unfortunately, none of the Target stores around here (the Triangle area of North Carolina) carries the 128 GB model in their inventory. I'm still considering purchasing the phone from Verizon, but that $250 gift card would certainly motivate me to pull the trigger this week.

I've been considering getting it from Verizon with the $300 off via bill credits as I think it expires on the 31st. I'm holding out for a better deal, but that's always a gamble.

Just to confirm my suspicions, I went on the Target website and searched North Carolina and Florida for any store that would have the 128 GB model Pixel 2 XL available in the store to take advantage of the $250 gift card offer, which expires this Saturday. After the trying both states, the search function responded with a message advising that "this item is currently unavailable in all stores." Putting this together with the district manager's admission that their department never stocks the 128 GB model, it appears to me that the information on the website declaring that the $250 gift card offer applies to the 128 GB model -- with the proviso that the item must be purchased in a store from current inventory -- is either an error or a misleading statement. In any event, the promotion is still a great opportunity for those who want the 64 GB model, but is obviously of no benefit to those of us who are interested in purchasing the 128 GB model.
