pixel 2 vs pixel 2 xl

Was wondering what the general consensus is. It seems the 2 has a much larger bezel which I guess makes it less future proof in an era of large screens with limited bezel real estate.

Thoughts?

I dunno, my thought is that the bezel nonsense needs to end. I have a 2XL, my wife has a first gen XL... Hers is a great phone, big chin or not. I just got my mother in law a first gen pixel... And I though it was a wonderful phone to use when I was setting it up.

Bashing bezels seems like something the cool kids are doing, so everyone else is chiming in.

Which one is better? Depends on what you want. Want a more compact phone that is a capable as anything on the market? Incredible camera... You know the run down. Or do you want a big screened beast of a phone that does pretty much the same? It's up to the user. I don't see it as a one or the other thing.

Once you get a Pixel 2 in your hands, the bezels just disappear.

Also, they look bad online, but in real life they're a non-issue.

I'm not sure how the bezels make it less future proof. It only seems like a personal preference to me.

I personally like them on my Pixel 2 because I can hold the phone sideways and not cover any of the screen or accidentally hit any buttons. Before I bought the phone I'll admit I noticed them, but that was most likely due to reviews pointing it out. With it in-hand after purchase, I don't even notice them.

That being said, maybe the Pixel 3 will go with a larger screen in a smaller phone to compete with the S8, since I think they are pretty similar in size. I wouldn't mind a bigger screen in this smaller phone. I just can't take the size of the XL or other large phones. I was so happy and relieved to find that the Pixel 2 was smaller than my Droid Turbo 2. Each phone I bought over the years got progressively larger.... and each time I told myself I wouldn't go any bigger. I finally got to go smaller.

Phones and future don't mix

Small bezels are important as it allows for a bigger screen wth a much smaller overall footprint. My honor 7X is a 5.9 inches and easier to use one handed than the pixel xl with is only 5.5 inches.

Personally, I'm used to larger phones so I went with the XL from an S7Edge. My wife has an S7 and isn't a fan of bigger phones. She really loves the camera on my XL but thought the front of the regular Pixel looked really outdated and I agree. Both phones look great from behind but they clearly left a lot on the table design wise on the front of the regular Pixel. Just looks like an older iPhone to us. That was just our opinion.

I don't truly think it is a one-or-the-other thing. Like you, I'm torn between the two - mainly because I know I'd love using both. I personally don't like how bezel-bashing has become a thing - I actually *like* bezels on my phone! - so I'd recommend either!

Do you watch movies on your phone? Do you enjoy gaming or reading lots of articles and making the most out of your screen real estate? Then perhaps the 2 XL is a better option. However, the 5" 2 is just as capable and I actually really love the look of it. :)

I actually wish they had released another Pixel device in the middle of the 2 and 2 XL - a 5.5" version - as I wonder if the 2 will be too small for me, and also wonder if the 2 XL will be too big! 😜

I don't see size of bezels a determining factor in future proof-ness. Guaranteed updates and the awesome camera is what future proofs my P2. But I don't care what someone else thinks of my phone either.

I agree with you: bezel size does not determine how "future-proof" a phone is. I've read so many reviews of the Pixel 2 and other bigger-bezel phones being "not future-proof"... I think the user him- or herself determines how viable the device will be for them now and in the future. :)

I originally ordered a Pixel 2 but when the display models showed up at Verizon I went and saw them and immediately decided to cancel my order and get the 2 XL instead. I was coming from an original Pixel and the P2 just looked to similar to the phone I already had. I did buy the 2 XL because of the reduced bezels in the end. It makes the phone look more modern and up to date IMO. Other flagship phones have this look and I felt I was buying Google's flagship phone. So, why should it look like the phones of yesteryear so to speak.

Looking and preforming are two different things.. the pixel 2 will be fully supported for a good three years... Not lip service.. Monthly security and system patches.

I prefer bigger phones and wanted the XL, but the screen burning put me off (don't care about the tint or the colour, but a potentially actual damage was a deal breaker). Miss the big screen (come from an s7 edge) but otherwise no regrets, I'm tied in now for 2 years but think I'll be quite happy (though will be looking closely at the 4xl!)

Change is bad! :D

I like the bezels - just a personal choice so not bashing anyone who doesn't like them - surf on folks!

Google has increased their warranty to two full years and that includes for Screen Burn-in! I've had my Pixel 2 XL 128 since launch and there is no sign of screen burn-in. You can now buy with confidence.

For what it's worth, what people were seeing was almost certainly temporary image retention, not 'burn in'. If it was the latter, the screens would have continued to degrade rapidly and based on the speed this occurred, by now we'd be seeing dim, washed out screens.
