Pixel 2 XL video quality at 1080p 60fps is shocking

I've been amazed with the camera on my Pixel 2 XL so far, but I recently tried switching the video frame rate from 30fps to 60fps and couldn't believe how much poorer it looks! There's so much missing detail and the resolution appears lower. It seems like either it's not using the full resolution of the sensor in this mode, or the bit-rate is too low.

I haven't seen any other complaints about this, so maybe it's just me? Is anyone else seeing the same?

I'm on Android 8.0.0 and using Google Camera version 5.1.016.174405463

for me the video recording on the pixel 2 XL is not anywhere comparable to the still image quality, they need improvement here

Well that's not even a option on the regular pixel 2 but video quality seems excellent

Yeah I don't have the option for 60fps on my 2XL. I'm on the 8.1 beta 2. My camera version is the same as OP too.

The 60fps option is not in the settings menu. It's located on the top bar when you're actually using the camera.

Just took two different videos and the results were great in both settings.

Did you try it with a scene with lots of detail in? And did you check the results on your PC? The difference isn't really noticeable when reviewing on the phone itself.

Detail yes....PC No...I'm at work and don't have that luxury.

What's more important, the video capture quality of your smartphone or your job?!? I mean come on, you can always get a new job! ;-)

Yeah but I like to eat and buy my toys and a new one might mean I have to sacrifice. Plus I get almost 6 weeks vacation and that's hard to negotiate.

Well sure if you want to eat, I guess you might as well keep the job.

Once mine didn't give us the 4th of July off. It actually fell on a Sunday, so he didn't have to give us the day off. The problem was, all the places we'd go into work at were closed, so he had us do inventory instead.

Spot the American?

Minimum 4 weeks by law in the EU but most decent jobs give you more to attract you.

We got 10 days of vacation per year, that couldn't be rolled over to the next year. If we didn't use them, we got reimbursed in a bonus which was 80% of a days pay for each day we didn't use.

Some places are better, but I'd bet there are some that are worse as well.
