Pixel 3 Astrophotography

Decided to try out the Pixel 3 XL Astrophotography mode. Pretty impressed.

Only a few stars were visible to the naked eye.

Yeah I've tried it myself with a steady as my hands could actually be haha. I don't have a tripod for my phone, but I was able to capture pictures of the stars and it looks awesome!

If I see the Millennium Falcon suddenly appear in one of my shots, then we'll know it ain't legit.

You mean abit like Huawei and their moon mode. They got caught out with that.

It's not in the menus. It triggers when the phone is in Night Sight mode and absolutely still - it won't appear if you're holding it, so a tripod mount or setting it leaning against something is necessary.

Basically, unless you have a tripod or can carefully lean your phone against a water bottle or something, astro photography mode won't activate. I have seen results of what astro photography mode is active, and it's awesome though!

Did some the other night and was quite impressed, first shots it wasn't really dark enough and second a bit of light pollution from a car headlight but good though, if it ever stops raining I'll have another go

No, I wedged it on top of our chicken coop, has to be dead still otherwise astromode dosen't work

How long does the shutter stay open?

I believe the shutter stays open for a good 45 seconds.

I think its a bit shorter than that to stop star trails, but takes multiple exposures over a minute or so and stacks them.

Yeah, I know that's why I was asking lol. I'd love to test that astrophotography mode. I just have to find something to make my phone steady enough with.

I had a tripod with a broken head. So I bought a new head. (Not a big deal - about $11 on eBay. Then I bought an adjustable phone mount on eBay. It just arrived today ... and we're socked in with the leading edge of that storm heading across the US. It's supposed to be only partly cloudy tonight and for the rest of the week, so maybe I'll give it a try tonight. (A lot of urban light pollution here, but aiming a bit overhead I should be able to avoid most of it. We'll see.)
