Hi,
Regarding Pixel 9:
Installed: Edison mail app.
I want this mail app to only check for new mail when it's activated by the user.
So: if the app isn't activated or is running in the background, it won't be able to check for new mail.
However, this fails: the app always checks for new mail anyway.
Settings: background battery use: off + background mobile data use: off + cleared cache.
Nothing worked.
Any suggestions?

Welcome to Android Central forums. I saw your post yesterday and hoped someone who knows more about Pixel might jump in but see if any of the steps below can help. You may have tried some of them, but please look over the list and check them all.

Using System Settings (Built-in Method)
  1. Open the Settings app: on your Pixel device.
  2. Tap on "Apps": to see a list of installed applications.
  3. Tap on the specific app: you want to restrict.
  4. Tap on "Mobile data & Wi-Fi": or "Data usage" to manage its network permissions.
  5. Toggle off the "Background data" switch: to stop the app from using data when you're not actively using it.
  6. For complete internet blocking, also toggle off the Mobile data and Wi-Fi switches in the same menu.
Using the App Info Shortcut
  1. Long-press the app's icon: on your home screen or app drawer.
  2. Tap the "App info" icon: (usually an "i" in a circle) to go to the app's details page.
  3. Tap on "Mobile data & Wi-Fi" .
  4. Disable background data: by turning off the "Background data" toggle.
  5. For total blocking, disable the Mobile data and Wi-Fi toggles.

In the meantime, we can also ask if this would be better in the Pixel forums. @Laura Knotek and @B. Diddy ?

Let us know what you find.

Thanks for reply,
I think I've done everything before and checked again. However, I keep receiving emails even when the mail app isn't active. See attachment.
I previously had a Nokia 7.2 with the same mail app (Edison Mail), and it worked fine there.
By the way, I don't see any "separate" WIFI switches
