Pixel Can't Receive SMS After Oreo Update From Verizon

Ever since the Oreo update, I am not receiving SMS messages on my Pixel. Nothing special, I am using Google Messages on Verizon. I have tried the Verizon Message+ app, not receiving any SMS on that either.

I can send SMS and the recipients get the message. They reply, and I don't receive a thing.

I have rebooted, tried some standard troubleshooting stuff. I don't want to reset to factory default unless someone confirms that doing so will solve my problem.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Have you called and asked Verizon if they can help? I use Textra on my Verizon Pixel and my SMS messages are fine. MMS has been a little qwirky today but nothing horrible. Verizon may be able to reset something on their end and get you up and running again. Hope it all works out quickly for you. Someone else on here will probably have some other things to try also. Most issues get solved on here pretty quickly. Some pretty knowledgeable people on here.

Exact same problem here. VZ using Android Messages standard SMS/MMS text app. Send works but I cannot receive from anyone since around 11pm CT Sunday Sept. 3rd. Updated to Oreo earlier in the week. I have had about 5 occasions in the 9 mo of owning this phone where I did not receive text messages but it cleared itself up through a restart. Quite frustrating this time since nothing seems to be fixing it. Not a former (never had) iPhone/iMessage user. Yes, I have Android Messages set as my SMS app. Same as OP, no SMS or MMS receive. Tried many things already.

Spent 1.5 hours on phone with Verizon Tier 2 tech support (1-866-221-4096) and we could not solve it. Only thing we did not try was an early step where he asked me to clear data for the app because we were pretty sure I would lose all text message history (I cleared cache only). He did not believe a Factory Reset would help the issue. We did a network reset, safe mode, Verizon Messages+ (to try and restart the service used by stock Android Messages) and nothing helped. He seemed to think the Android Messages service had stopped and he steps were trying to get that service running again. It does not show up in my apps/services list when I check. I forget what the name was (com.blah.....)

He did say he sees a lot of activity on this sort of topic on the Pixel since Orea in VZ support. Said I may need to go to a VZ store to have all texts saved. Then he said the that I could try one of two things 1) Android Messages app, clear data, force stop, then re-open OR (if not work) 2) uninstall messaging app (will also clear data he said), re-install latest from the store, open and try it. IF anyone tries above and has success/fail please let us know.

The Tier 2 VZ tech support was really working hard with me. He said if above does not work (something I have not tried yet because I want to preserve my text history first), then it would take a new update from Google on Oreo or an update to Android Messages in the app store. I'm hoping for either ASAP...

My test has been sending myself an SMS/MMS and I have not been successful for 36 hours. I have confirmed that my SMS and MMS messages are going to the recipient.

Try this (I recommended this in another thread and it fixed the guy's problem, you have nothing to lose).

  • Completely power down the phone (hold the power switch until you see Power Off menu).
  • Remove SIM card.
  • Power phone back up. Enter your PIN when reboot is done.
  • Completely power phone back off.
  • Insert SIM card.
  • Power phone back up. Enter your PIN when reboot is done.
  • Text someone. Have them text you back.

Fixed?

Thanks gozirra. I appreciate it you listing the steps. I tried them and it did not work for me. Same issues. Frustrating. Never have seen anything like this.

BTW, I have Android Messages 2.4.036.

Anyone know this....? I assume if I:
A) clear data, I will lose all of my text messages correct?
B) disable the app (and later re-enable) - will I lose all of my text messages?

Thanks

took the chance and did B). It did not clear the text message history (good) but it also did not fix the problem (bad).

When I clicked disable on the app (in Oreo) it asked if I wanted to replace this app with the factory original because it said all data would be wiped from the app when doing that. The latter is what the VZ Tier 2 support suggested that I mentioned in my original post though.

Well if you went through the steps I outlined, then it's likely not a provisioning issue with Verizon, so you can now rule that out. Have you tried a different messaging app? They can share the same .db file so you won't lose anything. That will rule out the app itself being the problem. Divide and conquer, divide and conquer, until the problem is solved, it's how the Navy taught me to troubleshoot decades ago :)

Chiming in to say I have the exact same problem with the same build of the messenger app. Tried gozirra's recommendation above with the Sim card, and other using a different messenger app didn't help either.

Good point gozirra... i'm in software too so I get it. Yup have tried Verizon's message plus app (something like that) and tried using FB messenger for SMS and same symptoms. Thanks for the tips we'll keep trying.

I called Google support from the pixel today and they had nothing.

Thanks Michael, yup I'm in the same boat. Hopefully none others are in the cone of a major hurricane like I am at the moment... all the more increasing my need to get this fixed ASAP...

Just throwing this out there - I was in the beta, and never had an issue with text messages the whole time. Mine continues to work flawlessly. Stock Messages app version 2.4.036 (Ocarina_RC32_xxxhdpi.arm64-v8a.phone).

(edit) its 2.4.036, I mistyped.

Thanks. My version is close but a little different:
version 2.4.036 (Ocarina_RC32_xxhdpi.arm64-v8a.phone)

And I wasn't a beta participant. I loaded Oreo up on 8/31 I believe.

I wasn't a beta user either and uploaded about the same time as you Gator. My messages worked fine initially as well and quit sometime this weekend (don't know when as I don't text much on the weekend). I have also had poor battery life issues as well. After reading a few forums today just decided to do a full factory reset and it is in the middle of restoring everything now. Messages work now so we will see.

(still not fixed for me but info below)
Interesting Michael, thanks. I'm really avoiding a factory reset but I may get there. I've seen others in other forums with similar "no receive texts in android stock app with pixel" where the factory reset fixed it for a bit but then the issue came back. Also a reddit post that sounded similar to our issue (pre-Oreo) and they reported some things working and then it coming back I believe. (nothing in these other forums worked for me).

I just got off the phone with VZ wireless Tier 2 support. Another very helpful person. They also had reference of this trail already so if ANYONE else is also having this same issue, I would urge you to post here and also to call the VZ number above so we can get more focus on this issue.

Finally, related to the 2 things I mentioned in my 2nd post above:
A) clear data, in the app (not just cache)
----> I did a back up to the cloud of my texts but I did this clear data in the settings for Android Messages and then went into the app again and all my text history was still intact. It DID NOT fix my rx text issue though.
(Update, it seems the texts take a while to be fully loaded so I can't tell if they have all come back yet)
B) disable the app (and later re-enable)
----> I did this but not the part where I could go back to the factory version of this app as it sounded a bit final as far as data loss. The disable (without backing to older version) and re-enable did not fix my issue.

Interestingly, she was able to see (from the network perspective) that it appeared that the texts were getting to me. But ironically, even though I have verified that my texts are getting to people, she did not see in the network that my texts were coming inbound to the network. Seemed strange.

A "network ticket" was logged (an NRB ticket?) and we'll see what happens I guess. But I would like to keep debugging to get this fixed.

Hopefully others with this issue will report their findings. I'd really like to get this fixed ASAP. At this point I'm hoping a new version of Android Messages gets pushed through the App Store and cures this for me and before this Hurricane gets to my area.

Update.
  • Updated SIM to new one. Re-activated on VZ with basic customer service. Did not fix. They passed me to Tier 2 Verizon again (3rd time but very helpful people).
  • He had me try Textra SMS app. Did not fix.
  • Also had me reset App Prefs. Did not fix. (would have done "reset all settings" but it was not available on my device/OSVersion)
  • Also had me go to APNs and reset to default. Did not fix.
  • Also had me change from Preferred Network Type of Global to LTE/CDMA. Did not fix.
  • Had me look to Clear Cache Partitions but it did not exist on my device/OSVersion.
  • We did what I shied away from earlier... to Disable the Android Messages App AND allow it to revert to the original, then updated the app with Google Store to the latest again. Did not fix. (and did not seem to lose text message history although it takes a while for them to load again). Did not fix.

Only thing left for me to do is to do a factory reset on the phone like Michael did. Will reply back after I do and see if it worked.

Sorry to hear you had to go to that level too. I had tried a few of those items on your list from today as well before giving up and doing a reset. The good news is the phone is working better today then it has it any point since I got Oreo installed and it cleaned up some other odds and ends bugs I was seeing. I will update if I see any message issues but as of right now the phone is working great.

I'm on T-Mobile and I am having the same issue today after installing Oreo last night. Going to try a few of the things suggested here.

Gozirra,
the power-down/remove sim card trick worked for me on my Pixel XL on T-Mobile. all the texts I missed during the last 24 hours came through after rebooting with the sim card back in.

FIXED. I spent time with Google support and VZW tier 2. We reset the network, re-seated the SIM card, tried different SMS apps, did all the stuff discussed in this thread. Nothing worked.

So I did a factory reset of the phone. SMS came back. It was a pain in the *** re-installing my apps, but the critical data (email, photos, music) is all in the Google cloud. I did not try a data/app restore, so don't know it that works or not.

My speculation is the Oreo update knocked out SMS on the phone. Resetting woke this back up.
