Pixel XL or V20?

Really depends on what you want--top of the line camera, speaker, microphone, sound quality, larger screen, all metal construction, milspec for drop protection....hard to say if sound quality will be better than pixel...but it will have an advanced DAC and amp. Also removeable battery, allways on display in top corner of screen....and LG handling software updates...microsd slot is a huge one of course.

Pixel will have good sound quality, really good camera (from what we've been told) but no removeable battery or microsd slot. But software from google direct with no delay and likely software specific to the pixel line only...

Having had LG phones before...the software was buggy at times. I ordered a pixel and losing the microsd slot is painful to me...but the prospect of specific software from google direct is interesting. But given the expense of the pixel xl, if I don't love it, its going back for sure.

I agree with you on all points except for top of the line camera on the V20... In all of reviews and pictures I've seen the V20 falls behind the Pixel's, Galaxy 7 series, and iPhones 7's.

V20 out yet? I'm making this decision likely next weekend. I've got a note 5 right now.

Definitely a tough call unless, like me, you want the biggest display you can wrap your hand around. My only concern with the V20 would be software given the bootloop problem that has affected some LG phones, including, I think, the V10. Although someone on a 6P forum, maybe on reddit, recently posted a complaint about his 6P being stuck in a bootloop, too.

I had an LG G3. Piece of crap. The LG GUI is hideously ugly. Just my two cents worth.

Coming from note 7, going to pixel XL. Once I saw the pixel will have a decent DAC it was an easy choice.

Milspec drop protection in the v20? Like naked and built to handle drops?

To a degree. The glass is still subject to cracking as the casing of the phone itself doesn't offer a protective lip as is afforded by most cases. But it handles the shock from drops exceedingly well, especially for a metal phone.

I've played with both and they both seem great. The UI for LG seems like the low point for Android skins between Samsung, LG, HTC, and Sony. It's got a nice camera setup and that DAC. The Pixel is going for a every mans phone with a great camera. I will say the Pixel feels really solid in the hand while the V20 feels more plastic. That's all I can really say about either.

Hmm. the DAC was important to you and that's why you went with the Pixel over the LG?

Yes the LG DAC is definitely higher spec, but this was the only real draw to the phone for me. I enjoy music but am by no means an audiophile, so having the best DAC is not enough of a reason to buy a phone.

The Pixel appealed more to me from the onset and once I saw it would have a decent DAC that would satisfy "my" needs the decision was made.

My brother just yesterday finally settled on the Pixel. He went back and forth but I think the quicker updates to the Pixel won him over.

I understand now :-)

I weighed both of these when it was clear the Note 7 was destined for an early grave, and went with the XL.

The removable battery is the only thing the V20 has going in its favor for me. Frankly, this does worry me a bit; the original battery on my current Note 4 started declining after not much more than a year of use. We'll have to see with the XL, though. And just because a phone does not come with a removable back cover does not mean the battery is not removable and replaceable. I've removed and replaced the battery on both my original Galaxy Gear watch twice and the Nexus 10 once.

The microSD is less important given that the XL has 128GB (and given the existence of Play Music and unlimited photo storage).

The DAC is a gimmick IMO. We're (generally) talking about compressed mp3 files to begin with, and even if someone does have the space or inclination to use FLAC files, the choice of headphones and even the proper fit of earbuds will have a far greater impact on sound quality than the DAC.
