Pixel XL taking better pictures than my Pixel

So, I have a Google Pixel and a Google Pixel XL phone. I love the camera on my Pixel XL which is why I bought the Pixel for my wife not long ago o she can take on the go pictures of our child. My problem is my Pixel XL takes noticeably better pictures than the Pixel. All settings are the same. Is this normal? I went through support at Google and went through a lot of steps and in the end they say to factory reset my phone which I did. The phone camera showed improvement but when comparing side by side pictures taken with the Pixel XL versus Pixel on my laptop you can still easily see the difference in quality. My Pixel XL is sharper and shows more detail, the Pixel has more blur and is softer, shows less fine detail. Any of of you guys test out the camera side by side? Shouldn't the picture be almost the same?
