Play stops when using headphone adapter on Pixel 3

I have had the Pixel 3 for just a few days now and have been having an annoying problem with the headphone adapter. (the one that came with the phone, brand new, in the box) When using the adapter, it will stop playing whenever I am listening to internmently. It Does it when playing podcasts with Google Podcasts, with Audiobooks using Audible, and when playing music. The app is still running and I can just tap play again and it starts, but then stops again, sometimes after just a few seconds, sometimes after a few minutes. Other times, when it begins playing again, it will play out of the phone's speakers.

I watched a YouTube video where the guy said I should reboot the phone with the adapter in place and it did work for a little while, but then it started it again. It doesn't do it when using google headphones. Any anyone else had this issue?

What headphones are you using? Can you test with other headphones? Make sure the headphones aren't specifically "Made for iPhone," since the contact rings can be slightly different.

Also, make sure the headphone jack portion of the adapter is clear of any debris. Use a can of compressed air to blow it out, and a toothpick to root around in it.

Another possibility is a faulty adapter. Did you get this phone used? If so, the adapter might be old and worn out.

B. Diddy Thanks for the reply, these are a set of Koss Plug earbuds. I have been using them for years for motorcycle riding. They have a foam earplug that works well to muffle the wind noise in the helmet. I did try them with another set of headphones that I use at my desktop and the same thing, plus it happens with a line in. The phone was new, in the box but I have now blown them out to make sure there is nothing in there from the shipping and I'll try that today. Could always be a bad one even though it's new.

so I decided to bypass the adapter altogether and went with a set of Bluetooth headphones. They are the same Koss Plug design, just Bluetooth. Now I am wondering why I didn't do that a long time ago. I use the phone when I am working in the yard and garage and not having to have a wire with a phone in my pocket all the time is much easier.

I am also a fairly recent convert to Bluetooth earphones though I prefer to stick with my old corded earphones running to a Bluetooth adaptor clipped to my belt (with the cord threaded under my outer layer of clothing to keep it out of the way). Couple of advantages of doing it this way:-

1) Often switch between listening on my phone to listening to my DAB personal radio (for the cricket commentary usually) or to my old Sansa Clip+ PMP neither of which support Bluetooth;

2) If the Bluetooth adaptor runs out of battery I can easily fail-back to using the USB adaptor which I keep in the side pocket of my key pouch - though last night realised that I have a USB battery pack which fits (snugly) into the belt holster I used to use with my old phone so that is another alternative as long as I remember to have a USB lead with me too.

gomezz: didn't even realize that such an adapter existed until yesterday. I may have gone that route if I had seen them first.
We have older cars that have an aux jack and with the old Blackberry I had a 3.5 to 3.5 cord plugged into the headphone, given the issue with that adapter I purchased a couple of type C to 3.5 cords and they seem to work fine but I would like to have that little button to pause and start play. I can do it using google assistant but the button would be more convenient. On the Blackberry Keyone, I could use the Button Mapper app to set the "special" button to do that and I used it all the time.
