This device is known for its 1080p HD screen, and yet the Google play store won't let me play HD movies or TV shows. Is there a setting somewhere to fix this?

I don't know if this will resolve your problem because I have not downloaded any movies from Google Play. However, there is an option in settings you could try. Go to Settings>Device>Screen Mode and set to Dynamic or try Movie. If you have it set to standard or Adapt Display it might be why you are getting only SD videos.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried your suggestion, but I'm still having the same issue. I think I'll leave it on dynamic now though. It looks better to my eyes

There is nothing to do about this issue, since the problem lies at Google Play Store and only thing can do is to email them about what movies aren't working in HD. Hopes they will fix the issues asap.

This is the response I got from google...Thanks for contacting Google!*At this time, most high-definition (HD) purchases are only available on tablets running Android 3.2 or higher and phones running Android 4.0 or higher. HD Movies are not able to be played back on computers at this time, so if you made a purchase in HD, it will revert to SD. TV shows in HD, however, are able to be played on the computer at this time.*

If an HD version is available, you'll see two buttons, with two different prices. Generally, a standard definition version is offered for a dollar less than the HD version.

At this time, certain movie studios and manufacturers dictate the definition of the video on your device and on the computer. So, even though your phone may support HD playback, the movie studio may not allow it. For more information, please see the following link:
