Played with an EVO tonight!

Tonight in Hollywood, Sprint sponsored an AFI event for Jerry Bruckheimer and as part of that event, they had a set-up featuring a bunch of EVOs and a 4G hotspot.

I'm now even MORE excited for June 4th. I was immediately impressed by how fast and smooth operation of the EVO and 2.1 was. The screen size was a real surprise. Holding the EVO up next to my Hero was shocking. The widgets are HUGE! The screen made the Hero's image look ridiculously minuscule. It made the Hero look like a toy phone. I also found the image size to be a very comfortable size for viewing videos. I was worried that the image would be of the iPhone variety where you really had to hold it up to within a foot for adequate viewing of video. Maybe it has to do with the increased resolution of the EVO, but watching a video while the phone was sitting on the table in front of me seemed very doable.

It's hard to talk about the 4G speeds since this was a temp 4G hotspot. I'd rather waiting and see what the real world serves up... Unfortunately, the Sprint rep said 4G availability would be complete until Nov/Dec of this year. it'll be rolling out throughout the year, but the entire city (and suburbs) wouldn't be complete until end of year.

I was thinking of going to that event last night but I decided against it. Sad to hear that we won't have complete WiMAX until the end of the year :(. 17 days away though!

What no pictures? Missed opportunity. lol

I agree, but I was just so happy to get to actually mess a bit with it that it didn't really cross my mind (although they would have looked just like the thousand other pics out there- plus, I couldn't get the pic of the EVO next to the Hero because I would have needed my Hero to take the pic).

It was a great event (saw Beverly Hills Cop with introduction from Eddie Murphy, Judge Reinhold, and John Ashton).

Keep in mind that he said end of year for complete (and only for Los Angeles). You could easily see 4G in your particular neighborhood at any time. But I agree, a little sad to hear it would take another six months to blanket LA.

One other thing I remembered... The guys doing the demos were talking about having to recharge the phones and saying that, even with the phones connected to power (I don't know if it was USB to a computer or the power cable), running the phones with the video chat was draining the batteries. Don't know how that'll equate to random everyday use, but it seems video chat at least is going to be a real battery sucker.

Always have to remind myself that as smartphones get more powerful and faster and closer to being a device that enables laptop/netbook dependency to go down, battery use will be a factor. That said, laptops don't last much longer than a couple hours when unplugged so getting a full day even if just one day would be ok with me.

Bet those phones had a ton of apps running at one time and a lot of use since they were last charged too.

I'm flying to Europe 4 days after I get my Evo, and will take it along to watch some movies on the flight. Definitely worrying about battery life, so...

...I ordered a 5000 mAh external battery to recharge in-flight. :D If the capacity is as claimed, I should be able to do 3 recharges before I need to find a power outlet.

@dwhitman
So I take it you didn't see this one. Zaggsparq 2.0 I am really looking forward to getting that. Should be enough to keep me up for a couple days when away from power.

Didn't know about this one. Might consider it if my JustMobile Gum needs replacement. Costs about $30 more than JMG though:(

But the one I am finding is only 4400mAh not the 6000mAh that the Zagg has. but who knows. I will be doing more research along the way. Just don't see paying $100 for 2 batteries when I can get this and don't have to power off my EVO to change the battery.

The JMG is only 4400mah. I have two (one for me and my wife), but 4400 seems like it would be enough to get through a day of even the heaviest use. It's also a bit smaller than the Zagg and that extra .5 inch in L&W is enough to discourage me from putting a recharger in an extra jacket pocket. Also liked that my JMG came with multiple charger coord connectors.

Both use the same battery tech though.

This thing is a handy little device, I use it for both my Hero and Pre (has Mini hook up with a Micro adapter).

It's gotten me through plane, car, and in a pinch situations.

@Rigmaster

Thanks for the info on JMG. It is cheaper, and your probably right on the length of time. I will decide after I get my EVO, and actually see how much power i zap from the thing.
