I am wanting to buy my husband a tablet pc for Christmas so I thought I'd turn to the Android community for help. While I would love to have the time to read through this entire forum, I have a two year old and that's not happening.

So, oh wise and tech-savy forum users, please help me out and tell me your thoughts on what you think are the best tablet pc's out there. My husband loves Android (has a Galaxy S Captivate) so I'd like to get him an Android based tablet.

I appreicate the input and thanks in advance!

P.S. I have to stay in the $150-300 range.

Samsung actually has a Galaxy S Tablet, which it sounds like your husband would love! It is slightly higher than your price range ($400), but most good tablets will be that much or more. Check out our Galaxy Tab forum for lots of info :D

Well these at least give me something to look at. I'm not sure I can afford the 400 Galaxy (although I think he'd be tickled pink and several other colors of the rainbow).

It's hard to find a decent one that isn't crap that's not out of this world.

Barnes and Noble Nook Color

Take a look at the Book Color on Barnes and Noble. Com. Its an ereader that runs Android and has a full browser and all. Its 7inches and priced at$ 249. Engadget gave it an awesome review that you should check out. Im going to check this out at the store and if its half as good as it sounds it will be my next electronics purchase.

Fom one girl to another, jdmccay, I hope that my answer isn't too late.

I'm a Tech Addict; don't know much about them (like an I.T. does) but I do love my toys. When the iPad was launched, it was ONLY the price that kept me from buying one. Now, months later, I have no interest in one, since I've done 100's of hours of research and seen that FINALLY there's some competition against Apple.

I've bought 3 different tablets and returned two of them: The Entourage Pocket Edge and the regular Edge and finally settled on the Nextbook2 for a measely $150.00 from HSN, with four flex pays of $40.00 per month.

I've had it for ONE WEEK and hand's down, it was the BEST DARN CHOICE for 2010 that I've made!

The Edge Products were waaaaaaay too complicated, came with NO paper manual, and was just too "much" for my simple needs.

What I need:

1) Ability to check email without running the gauntlet through different windows to access my 14 year old MSN account. NO!!!, I don't want to change my business email address to AOL, Gmail, Yahoo!, or any other server. I want MSN, thank you very much and many devices have a hard time processing MSN.com.

2) Photos, photos, and more photos...and some videos, too. I have a very high-end landscape firm and rather than dragging my 17" Sony laptop to clients to "Show & Tell", I wanted to download photos and videos of various projects and show them my work.

3) PDF files. Whether blue prints, punch lists or grocery lists and recipes, I wanted an ability to store information WITHOUT having to access the internet, since so many of my job sites are "raw"...no electricity, plumbing, heat or internet!

What I did NOT need from a tablet:

1) Camera! Are you kidding me? Digital camera are shrinking while their MP size is increasing and tablet companies want me to drag a 7" or 10" tablet around to take crappy photos? No thank you! I'll use my three digital cameras I own, thank you very much!

2) Gaming! Ha! Never, ever, in this life!

3) Skyping and Video chatting. Half of my family lives in the U.K. They warned me that if I ever wanted to "video chat", they'd sooner hang up on me! As my Mum said, "I don't want to tidy up the lounge and fix my face to chat with my daughter!" 'Nuff said.

4) Music. Got a HD Zune with a Zune Pass that allows me to have 1,000's of songs for $14.99 per month. Don't need to clog up a tablet with music and besides, when would I listen to it? During email? During presentations? Nah, no thanks!

5) Apps, schmaps! The Nextbook came preloaded with apps for EVERYTHING I need: ebay, wikipedia, amazon, youtube and The Weather Channel. I can't surf the web and install irrigation lines, now, can I?

So, for $150.00, I got my feet "wet" in the tablet market, get to see how it works, price point is super fantastic that should I want to change, I can gift the tablet to my 10 year old son. I also love the fact that it does have books on it so when I'm waiting for a client or contractor to show up, I have something to read.

Hope this helps you!

First off, ignore Miss Minnesota's advice completely. She is pointing you towards a crappy ebook reader that your husband will think is a piece of junk next to his Android phone, because it is. He will want apps like he can get on his phone and he will probably want some games to pass the time.

Unfortunately, you are not going to get anything fantastic in your price range. The best user experience is going to come from the Samsung Galaxy Tab, which is going to set you back around $600. The tablet I bought is awful out of the box but can be made good if you are a computer expert. I don't recall how much the Archos 70 goes for, but that will probably give you the best experience for a less-expensive Android tablet. They are hard to come by, though, from what I have read.

Shame on YOU, popezaphod, for Bad Board Behaviour! Didn't you listen to your Mama when you were growing up, that you treat other people and their opinions with R.E.S.P.E.C.T.???? If your post is indicative of this board's mentality, than my visits here (and possibly the original poster's) will be very short-lived, indeed.

Not only did you diss my comments on a recommended $150.00 price point tablet for jdmccay but more importantly, you dissed HER, and her budget of $150 to $300 MAXIMUM! Suggesting a tablet $100.00 over her budget is NOT what she wanted or needed to hear. Nor did she need to hear that anything LESS than a $400.00 unit would not be "fantastic" for her husband.

I can amply afford a Samsung Galaxy tablet but after returning the Entourage Edge and reading about the Samsung unit, most websites agreed: wait for their 2.0 version, after they get the bugs out of this launch. Since I've never owned a tablet, the Nextbook "Reader" is a great, inexpensive set of "training wheels" for me to learn on and to find out if I even need/want or will use a tablet for my business. Within a year's time, there will be so many tablets to choose from that almost every price point will be covered and iPad will have some serious competition. THEN, I'll see if I need to upgrade from my "crappy ereader book" into something that meets with your approval rating, popezaphod.
