Please help choose phone for a unique specific application.

I need to replace my ancient, failing phone. The things I use a phone for may be somewhat different from many people. Here is my specific application and requirements.

I travel alone on on/off-road motorcycle trips and spend a lot of time in remote wilderness situations, in very cold weather, doing other risky activities(skiing, snowshoeing, climbing, boating, shooting, ect...). Emergency communication is important for everybody, but perhaps a bit more to me than usual.

I tend not to care much about things that some find important. Display quality is kind of lost on me. I only care if it's bright enough to see the GPS mapping software in bright daylight on motorcycle mount. Also, I don't do any gaming.

BIggest things for me are: Battery life and reliability. Ruggedness. GPS capability in airplane mode, for offline map apps(Osmand) when no phone signal is present(searching for service will kill batteries). Basic Internet browsing. Camera- pictures of my adventures. Reasonably low replacement cost, as I am likely to have it lost/stolen/broken.

I really like the simplicity and features of the 2015 Moto G, but worry specifically about the low-light and closeup performance of the camera. Some of the sample shots I see are beyond terrible, even compared to the 2014 model, or other cheaper phones. This is the only thing keeping me from buying.

What are some other options that I should be looking at, specifically with an eye toward decent camera performance to document my adventures?

Welcome to Android Central! The Casio G'zone Commando line has always been one of the most rugged (as well as one of the most bizarrely named). And believe it or not, Caterpillar (the heavy equipment manufacturer) also has a line of phones: Rugged phones | Cat phones US

You may also consider the "Spot" in addition to a phone. It's sat. based - basic only sends SOS with your gps location, other version will let you send short messages via sat (do not need cell service) A lot of people in our camping forum that either off shore fish or camp in remote areas use it, generally for emergencies only.
I would also get a phone with replaceable batteries. Carry enough extras so that you never have to worry about battery life in remote areas.
