Please help me understand peoples experiences with Froyo.

Why have people been experiencing different things with Froyo? We have members who have different issues with 2.2 and it seems to vary between phones. Many people have no issues whatsoever. My questions is shouldn't all of us be having the same exact experience? Either all of our phones work fine or we should be experiencing the same exact issue, shouldn't we?

Probably depends more on if people are loaded down with apps/widgets that are not 100% 2.2 compatible, or need to be uninstalled/reinstalled just due to 'something' in the programing that is just not 'perfect' to handle the phone being updated while installed, even if they are '2.2 updated' versions. Plus, some of the core phone settings get toggled back on(or off) after the update, so it takes a bit before someone figures out what setting may have been changed unknowingly.

From reading the posts – I’m going to go out on a limb and say that 90% of the install issues were because people can’t be bothered to read ALL the directions. Various issues – same “root” cause. The same can be said for when these users used “one click” root without understanding what it really means or how to use it or undo-it. (Just because a thing CAN be done, does not mean it SHOULD be done.)

As far as performance issues go. I would imagine that what apps the user has installed plays a big factor in things. For example, I don’t use Twitter or FaceBook so the problems with those apps on Froyo are moot to me.

The Task Killers are also probably causing more problems than they are solving, especially since they don’t work in Froyo.

Then there are the very real stale cache problems with either apps or Android itself that some users are facing. Unfortunately, some will have to do reset’s despite efforts to avoid that for users.

As phones become more and more computer centric in their design and development, we will start seeing the same issues that computer's have. A stable hardware platform + near unlimited variable combinations of software = headache.

D1. Stock 2.2.2. No task killers. Launcher pro set to 1 home screen. Only use power widget. I turn off what I don't need. I use k9 for work and personal email. Turned off Google sync (use shutupbattery for this) I stay away from battery sucking apps. I have stopped using task killers with 2.2.

And have 0 problems and very good battery life. I am otherwise a very heavy user and have a ton of apps that allow me to leave the laptop at home.

Love 2.2 and agree with posts above.

That all makes sense. I was thinking many issues were root related. Thanks for the detailed explanation PvilleComp, I was hoping you'd chime in. :D

Alot of people did the ruu method or update.zip method and claim that its ota. Seems like everyone that has done these other update types are experiencin wacky problems.

Ha!

You either have had too many Girls and not enough Smartphones

Or

Too many Smartphones and not enough Girls.

Not sure which ;)

Thanks for the chuckle!

Haha I wasn't trying to be funny but I'm glad you had a laugh. What I was meaning is let's say we all spend a day with Jessica Simpson, of course peoples opinions will vary about her. Next, let's say we all have a smartphone that after a certain update, our ear pieces for phone calls doesn't work. I'm pretty sure opinions on that issue would be 100% the same. It would not be acceptable.

This analogy implies that some people put up with flaws or quirks. I do don't experience any flaws with 2.2. I do believe that others certainly have for variety of reasons already stated.

That's what I'm hoping this is... I plan on trying a reset sometime over the weekend to see if it performs better afterward. My battery didn't even make it through my day at work today, which is the first time this has happened since getting this phone.

The earpiece problem is an interesting one. I wonder if some different parts were used at various stages of manufacturing for this piece. VZW/HTC is certainly not having a problem replacing them if they fail after the update, so I suspect there was an expectation that X number of units might fail after the update.

If I remember correctly the earpiece seems to be the only hardware related issue that people are reporting consistently. Everything else is software or perception issues.

x2 Thanks for the detailed explanation PvilleComp! And thanks to all for your perspectives as well. I've been holding off the Froyo update notification on my device... Kind of waiting to see how these issues pan out.

No problem, I'm happy to help where I can and crack a joke from time to time. ;)

I would not worry about doing the update. Use a file manager and copy all your data, pics, music, ect to the SD card before updating as a precaution. You might want to export you contacts to your SD card too before updating if you're really worried.

So far I don't believe anyone has reported the update.zip or OTA (they are the same thing really) deleting any data.

If you want to make sure you avoid as many problems as possible, prepare to do a restore. Synchronize with AppBrain, wipe and reload.

At some point you will probably have to reset the phone during its life, you might as well get practice in pursuit of a good cause. ;)

Happy Froyoing!

Sync w/ AppBrain, done a week ago in anticipation. Wipe & reload in prep for 2.2 OTA Rodger that ~ makes sense now that I think about it. Clears cache, settings and such. Practice resetting phone... sheesh, you don't mince words huh? I know you're right on about that though.

Thanks for the tips! Okay, one last thing... a couple shots o scotch an' I think I'll be ready to do this!
