You have to root your phone first then flash a custom recovery

Well im hoping you rooted your phone first, and made a backup because every tutorial to flash a custom rom has always had "Make a backup" But if you did both of these Power down your phone then
hold Home + Volume down , then the power button (all at the same time).
Clear cacha part, clear dalvik cache, format boot, data, system, cache
Then flash your backup
Reboot

Sounds like you had a bad flash on your recovery or you used an older recovery that is not compatible with newer ov's. Can you still boot into your rom (android). If so go to this thread http://forums.androidcentral.com/showthread.php?p=1150713and download the recovery listed in the "Install Custom Recovery Image" section and flash it with flashimagegui

Is it just your recovery or is it rom and recovery that give you black screens?
