My mother was ready for a new phone. Her Centennial Wireless was bought out by ATT so we went there. I tried to talk to her about VZW and the DInc but she was adamant about staying with ATT....

So we walk into local ATT corp. store and start looking. Mind you she was moving from an older BB Curve...

Basically we were down to three choices.... BB Torch, iphone or Samsung droid phone. I immediately ruled out the iphone....mom does not need the hassle of itunes.

Looked at the new Samsung with 4" Super AMOLED screen but in the end she went with the new Blackberry Torch.... after playing with it for a few hours, I must admit it is a nice phone.

My point of this thread is I feel sorry for ATT customers....not many Android phones to choose from, and obviously no DInc!

We were setting there doing the paper work and all was quiet. Then I got a text....guess what sound I use for text notifications?

"DROOOID"

Got a lot of funny looks. I just laughed!

If any elders in my family want a smartphone - you know, something simple - I'd probably recommend an HTC device with Sense first. 2nd would be a BlackBerry - even a neophyte can get used to a BB in a few hours.

None of 'em use Apple products; so, there'd be no reason for me to trap them in Apple's little world with an iPhart.

I don't feel sorry for AT&T customers because they don't have many Android devices. I feel sorry for them because the service sucks. I had AT&T for many years before I had Verizon and then after having Verizon and loving it, I went back to AT&T so me and my girlfriend could have a cheaper family plan at the time. It was horrible.

I wouldn't receive phone calls from work that were very important. I wouldn't get a lot of my text messages and people would wonder why I didn't respond to their text. Sometimes these text being of importance.

I lived in a rural area. No 3g Service for at least an hour away. Verizon has 3g everywhere I go. I can go to the smallest town and still have full 3g service. People in the area get the iphone but there is no 3g service so therefore they can't have a good browsing experience.

I'm definitely not against the iphone. I think it's a great product. I think Apple makes great things. I am a MacBook Pro user myself. But the service is just terrible. Now I live in a bigger city so there is 3G service but I still travel to and drive through many areas that would not have 3G service if I had AT&T.

Also Verizon still has unlimited internet where as AT&T does not. 2GB is their biggest package. Although when Verizon's 4G comes out throughout America they are making their internet plans limited also. I read an article and the rumor is they could have a 5GB plan instead of 2GB like AT&T which is PLENTY enough. I browse and use the internet a LOT but still don't get anywhere near 2GB a month. This month I used only around 100MB and that's with pretty heavy use. Although I still would go with the 5GB package and not the 200MB package or anything like that just incase.

I do prefer Android over the iphone as of now. The only thing I like better about the iphone is the market not being open. On Android if you search for something you have to scroll through a million and one useless things because anyone can get stuff into the market where as Apple monitors their market more and controls it better. Although Android does have lots of free apps.

I went from BlackBerry to Android and I can't go back to BlackBerry. Back in the day BlackBerry was very advanced but nowadays it just doesn't cut it. I definitely don't miss trying to browse the web on my BlackBerry tour. I remember it being really slow and having to wait forever for a page to show up. So, I mostly didn't browse even if I wanted to.

Since Android phones are now popular it would be good if they could get pushed content the way BlackBerry does. Android would be perfect if apps could have pushed content. Like on a BlackBerry when you receive a new Facebook or MySpace message it alerts you on the app. The only way to be alerted on Android is through the pushed Gmail or manually checking it.

Anyway, there is my opinion. Trust me I know how it is trying to get mom to look at Verizon. My parents had horrible service and never got my phone calls when they had AT&T and I finally talked them into getting Verizon. They have Verizon now with good service and for some reason they are talking about going back to AT&T!!!! I'm not sure why. They had AT&T since the Cingular days and are just used to it. Sometimes mom and dad's don't like change!

That was the other thing. While setting there I noticed moms new BB showing EDGE and asked the gal, "Dont you have 3G here?" Her answer was no 3G in ANY of the surrounding counties or obviously, that one. This was Richmond, IN.... fairly big place!

Have you seen the 3G map? It's barely anywhere. There are even a lot of area's without it in big cities. You have to pretty much be lucky to be anywhere with it. If you're traveling and plan on browsing the web at 3G speeds you can pretty much forget it with AT&T. It's a mobile device so I like to be able to have all of these features anywhere I go. So far, anywhere I have gone with Verizon I have had 3G. No matter how small the area is. I don't think I've ever had to browse at a 1X connection anywhere I've been.

I switched for this reason also, I pre-ordered the Incredible and ATT had no android phones at that time. I wish they had a larger selection I would switch back. I live in nowheresville upstate NY and always had 3G service. The 3G is noticably faster than the so-called 3G I get on verizon. The customer service I recieved from ATT was 100 times better than what I have recieved on verizon too.

I do like the cdma working inside my office, the gsm didnt. I like that most of the people I know are on verizon so that helps too.

I have 1.5 years to go I will go over my choices then and decide to switch back ATT or stay with verizon.

I have both a "Nexus One" and an "Incredible".

I have had Att for years and been pleased with the service.

Then, I got the "Incredible" on Verizon ... the voice quality is not anywhere near as good as on my Att phones.

I'm also often 1x here in Miami but when it is working.. 3g is decent.

My Att 3g speeds are great most anywhere in Florida and have yet to travel with the Verizon handset.

Simultaneous voice/data is a must for me which is why I prefer Att.

I do like both phones and wish ma bell had a better android selection but I suppose that is on the way.

Oh yeah.. I have an original true unlimited data plan.

That's my 2 cents.

Well, this just goes to show it is different according to the area you live in. I really only speak for the area I live in and area's I've been. 3G service is lacking for most people. In NY I imagine it covers a lot of area.

I'm not sure what the problem is with Verizon's 3G because mine definitely isn't slow. If I go to a desktop version of a website on my droid as soon as I hit enter the website is almost all the way loaded. I can watch YouTube videos in high quality and it starts playing within seconds of clicking it.

Now that's not to say that AT&T's isn't faster. Because it is faster. But Verizon's isn't much slower. Again dependent on your location. Plus, I look at it in my area as, faster 3G with AT&T in only some spots and not very many OR plenty fast enough as I need it 3G on Verizon every single place I go. Even if I take trips that are hours away.

Being on the phone and using the internet was never a factor for me. I never have had the need to do this. Although that might be a cool feature to have for some people or a perk, I couldn't imagine that really playing into the deciding factor.

From what I've heard even in places that have 3G from AT&T it seems pretty horrible. But that doesn't mean it's always the truth. But if you google anything to do with the iphone all you read about are stories about AT&T's service. Radio host Howard Stern had a BlackBerry Bold on AT&T and switched to BlackBerry Tour on Verizon in just a few months and he lives in New York City. Due to him not being able to make a phone call with his service.

I did a speed test in my area and got almost 1.5mb download speed just from my 3G network. That is a lot. We are talking about a cell phone here getting 1.5mb. Most people would even be okay using that speed on a computer.

In this article it seems that Verizon customers are getting much faster speeds than AT&T: http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2009/07/3g-speed-test/

What it seems like is, technology wise AT&T 3G is faster but doesn't reach as far. So, to experience it being this fast you have to live or be in a good area. Most people across the country aren't.

IMHO AT&T is getting into the game after being hindered by Apple. Since they are supposedly loosing Apple exclusivity, they are slowly gaining more android phones. With the Captivate in their lineup now the are slowly coming up to par. The whole "no third party apps" issue is kinda moot since there are work arounds for that. I would imagine once the exclusivity is gone they will obtain more feature packed phones like the Evo and DInc. As far as service is concerned it depends on where you live. In my area AT&T was great for me. I was with them since 1998. I never had a problem with service until the iPhone 4. Way too many sheep in my area whom clogged the service pipelines. Calls and data were dropped all the time. Data speed was slower also. If you're in an area that doesn't have a lot of "sheep" I would suspect the service would be decent. Here in Kalifornia we have way too many sheep.

Well, you shouldn't feel sorry for AT&T customers because most of them are over there for the iphone anyway and the iphone is a great phone. If it wasn't for the iphone I highly doubt we would have our Android phones. We might would but it wouldn't be as advanced and as cool as it is.

I mean face it, Apple changed the way smart phones were forever with the iphone.

That's not to say that another company can't come along and improve the technology though as Android is doing. And since a lot of companies make Android phones Android technology moves along much faster than the iphone can.

Won't be long until Android has facetime!

I guess it depends on the area where you live. I had AT&T service for about 6 years...last 2 with the iPhone. I never had issues with dropped calls, but the 3G was terrible for internet...so bad that I had to stare at my phone while waiting for it to check e-mail. I've been with my Incredible for about 5-6 weeks and I haven't experienced issues with voice calls. However, the 3G internet it's more reliable and faster than whatever I experience with AT&T. Happy camper here who has no plans to go back to AT&T. :D

I wouldn't get an Android device on AT&T anyway. I usually hit 7 to 10 GB on my EVO without tethering. Android devices are more data hungry than any other device on the market. A 2 GB cap isn't going to cut it. At least not for me. I would be better off with a blackberry smartphone on that network.

I wouldn't talk my mom into an Android phone. It's a great platform but has a high learning curve. I think the iPhone is much simpler to use and would recommend that phone for the non-tech crowd.

I feel sorry for ATT customers because of the ****ty reception.

They don't need Android phones, they got the all mighty iPhone!!!!!!!!

Now that we can do mobile wifi, we can offer our poor AT&T brethren (iPhone users included) a hand when they have no reception.

At&t has never been an option for me due to their poor service here and where I travel to along the road trips I go on .

This is one thing I dislike about AT&T. Verizon starts to compare 3G coverage maps (a legitimate if not controversial comparison) and AT&T cries foul and tries to get the ads pulled. When they fail in the courts, they hire Luke Wilson to pimp out....their cellular coverage map, which is not a legitimate comparison. In other words, AT&T is banking on the notion that its customers are morons and do not understand the distinction between cellular coverage and 3G coverage, and is otherwise just doing their best to interject confusion and doubt into Big Red's claim.

VZW: "I have 5x more Jellybeans than you."
AT&T: "Mom, tell him to take it back and apologize for insulting me!"
Courts: "He's telling the truth son..he does have 5x more Jellybeans than you. That's not an insult, it's a fact."
Luke Wilson: "Oh yeah, well you're wrong because AT&T has a jar 95% full of acorns."
VZW: "..."

Well, the map's I'm talking about are not the map's that Verizon put's on their commercials. Just speaking from researching online. There are a few companies who have went out and figured out where the 3G was and where it wasn't.

AT&T could have already fixed this problem but I guess they look at it as too much money to have 3G everywhere like Verizon does. But I mean they are going to have to do it at some point in the future. Got to spend money to make money.

It looks like Verizon has 3G on every single tower that gives service. If it's not everyone of them it's a lot.

I think AT&T will stick with their 3G coverage as it is currently deployed and try to bridge the coverage gap with their 2011 LTE deployment.
