Poor Call Quality, Despite Replacements

I switched to Verizon a little less than a month ago, purchasing a Droid Incredible and associated plan and leaving AT&T and an overrated iPhone 3G behind in the process. While I love the DInc, I have had issues with the call quality of the phone, despite several replacements. I am wondering if anyone else has had similar issues, and if we could possibly share some info and see if anything fits a pattern.

I will go into a little more detail concerning my specific issue with the phone. On about 90% of all phone calls, I have difficulty hearing the other person. I describe it like if you are listening to a radio station in your car that is just on the verge of going out of range. The audio cuts in and out, there is baseline static underneath anything spoken, and it is generally difficult to understand the other person. Sometimes the audio sounds tinny, while other times it sounds slightly garbled. A couple people I have called have mentioned that my voice sounds different, or that the sound is off, while others say they notice no difference. My signal strength is typically between -65 and -100 dBm, and I occasionally see my phone switch from 3G to 1x, despite not moving.

I have talked to Verizon's tech support about the issue, and they had no answers, but did issue a network support ticket for me. I have also had my phone replaced (twice) at a nearby store. The personnel there had no answers, but replaced my phone. One helpful person did call my phone with her blackberry and tested it, after which she said "My phone sounds a lot better than yours!" That at least helped prove that I wasn't going insane, or deaf.

Now, I want to believe that the odds of having three straight phones with the exact same issue are pretty low, and it has persisted through multiple resets and the OTA update (the issue exists right from a factory reset as well, so it is not an app conflict). I received my first phone from the online store, while the next two were from local stores in Tallahassee, Florida. I ported my phone number from AT&T, and have had the same issue for approximately 25 days. Is it possible that something messed up the porting process? Or that there is some bizarre conflict between my phone and the local network?

If anyone else has had similar issues, I would love to hear from you concerning the following information:
1. Where do you live (general area is fine)?
2. Did you keep your old phone number when you switched carriers?
3. Did you ever get the issue resolved? If so, how?

I like the phone a great deal, but its primary function, phone calls, is not getting the job done. I have about five days left on my 30 day return, and so would like to see if I can get this resolved before that deadline is reached. If I cannot fix the Incredible, I will probably try to switch to the Fascinate. My fear is that the same reception problem would follow me to that phone if the issue is not with the phone hardware itself.

Sorry for the long post, I tend to be a little verbose. If anyone has any information, this is as good a place as any to find it.

Wow....

Same exact situation I'm in. Same voice issues to the tee. I really like this phone as well, but it's getting harder and harder to convince myself to keep it. I am on the fence as well when it comes to the Fascinate, and I would really hate to exchange this phone for a Fascinate and possibly get stuck with the same choppy voice issue. I've made a few calls on a Captivate as well as a Vibrant and the calls seem to be a bit better than the ones made on my Dinc.

I just wish there was a way to clear up the voice because I really like the way the Incredible is built, the Sense UI, as well as the way the words format correctly when you enlarge the browser window.

jrkrace,
Where do you live that you have experienced these issues? And do you have a new phone number, or did you take it from a different carrier? I'm trying to see if any of these data points line up.

I live in the New Haven area of CT and I've been with Verizon for about 22 years so the number is older and was not ported.
