Poor reception / radio signal strength

Does anyone else have a problem with their radio signal meter jumping wildly?

At home, my 3g signal strength can go from 4 bars to 0 bars the next moment. When it's 3-4 bars, browsing and data are smooth. But when it drops to 0 bars, data seems to stall. So I think it's not just a problem with the meter.

Similarly, I was in Las Vegas over the weekend, and the problem was much worse. Even right next to a window in the hotel room, the signal strength would fluctuate. And I had many more data problems - connections were stalling or dropping, etc.

Just curious if my phone has faulty hardware, or maybe this is just the phone's behavior in general

I had this problem, but it stopped all of a sudden after I rooted my phone. Strange. However, data never stalled for me, even with 0 bars.
