Poor sound quality

I'm trying to figure out if the poor sound playback is inherent in the design or just present on my phone. So far I've had none of the common issues on my unit except for slow gps lock. I just started using it for mp3 playback and whether through the speakers or my set of Ultimate Ears the music is very tinny and extremely low volume. When I adjust with an equalizer it just sounds like the amp is being overloaded severely. Also if anyone has recommendations regarding settings or favorite playback apps please post them
