I am guessing one of your applications that has ads, picked up a rogue ad, or possible your browser did. Myself, I would just do a hard reset and wipe the phone clean because you could spent weeks trying to track it down. A couple of weeks ago a person posted that this ad kept popping up on his phone:

Instead of a master reset. I would download a free ad tracker. Htc will tell you there is no need for it. Did you also check the notification bar for current running apps? Touch and hold, and go to app info. Go to recently updated app from the Play Store: My apps section. Some good things to start will help.
