The Portable Wifi Hotspot feature was working on my Nexus S (actually on Fido/Rogers in Canada) when I first got it 4 weeks ago.
About 2 weeks ago though it stopped working.
Basically when I turn on the Portable Wifi Hotspot feature, the 3G symbol (and signal ) disappears and there is No Internet.
a wifi device (I am testing with an iPad) sees the hotspot but does not get any service.

I have tested this with the service provider by swapping my SIM into their identical Nexus S.
Portable wifi hotspot works fine on their phone.

With their SIM in my phone, it still doesn't work.

and we have carefully compared settings to make sure they are identical.

I have also done a Factory Reset under Privacy settings, but the problem remains.
when I disable the Portable WIfi Hotspot feature, the 3G symbol returns.

So, it appears to be a problem with the phone.

Before I hand it back for the 10 days a repair or replacement would take, has anyone else encountered this problem?

Is your Nexus S on Android 2.3.6? If so, I think that is why the wireless hotspot isn't working. That update kills the tethering feature on the Nexus S.

Bingo!
Indeed checking my phone, I am on 2.3.6 and the Nexus S we tested in the store is on 2.3.4

so, what do I do now? trade this in for an alternate phone? is that another update pending to fix this? can I roll back to 2.3.4?

and is this specific to the Nexus S (so it would be a Samsung issue) or is it the same on all Android phones with 2.3.6.

brilliant spot by the way. The participants in some of these forums are most impressive.

Well this isn't a "problem," that is what this update was supposed to do, break tethering. Google sent this update to break tethering I guess because the carriers disliked that the Nexus S had the tethering feature for free and forced or persuaded Google to break it with the Android 2.3.6 update.
No you really can't roll back to android 2.3.4. I think the only way you can tether is if pay for it.
Hope this helps.

well, I bought the phone and service because it had the Tethering feature included.
it worked great for the first two weeks.
and now it doesn't because of this well documented Update.
and so I will return the phone and cancel the contract if they cannot assure me that it will be restored.
simple as that. (thought I expect it might take a few very snippy letters to make that happen.)
