I've seen a couple of review videos that are up today on YouTube and it's split between some saying that the portrait mode on the front camera is awesome and the others are complaining that it's completely disabled and automatically defaults back to the rear camera so weird

Some people did reviews with review units sent from Google, some people did reviews with units sent to Verizon stores?

the Verizon display unit I messed with had it disabled too

That was my point. The reviews I've seen online that have review units all had working front camera portrait mode. The only ones I've seen that were disabled were Verizon demo units.

You just select Portrait mode and it just works. At least it did for me when I went to Verizon. I was pretty impressed as well by the results.

now that's really weird this problem isn't even segregated by the unlocked version or the Verizon version it just seems random AF

The ones I've looked at at the three Verizon stores here all had front portrait disabled.

The SuperSAF video posted in another thread had the front facing portrait mode working I believe. I thought I read in another post that it was disabled on demo units or something. Is there a setting someplace?

It's not disabled. When you take a portrait on the front facing camera it doesn't show the blurred background until after you snap the photo. I think it's a misconception.

I received my pixel 2 xl today and couldn't use portrait mode on the front facing camera until i updated the camera app. Once updated it works.

We checked this at Best buy with my friend who works for Google. He said later in the day, that an update came and the portrait mode worked, after he activated the phone.

Can confirm this is true. The app just needs to be updated.

I did not need to update the camera app. The portrait mode worked perfectly right out of the box on mine.

I have a feeling my friend's phone update itself after be activated it. We both took several pictures with it and the front facing portrait mode did not work. He sent me a picture later and it was working.

How did you update it? I just got my pixel 2 today (Verizon) and I can't access portrait mode with the front facing camera either. I was wanting to use it for pics with my kid. Any help is much appreciated.
