With the main camera, if I'm taking a picture of a group of people in portrait mode, Will that not work?

I think it will work but part of the group will be blurred. Just try it with different group compositions. Portrait mode is just a software trick to make a cutout that will be focused leaving the background opened to different levels of "blurriness".

I guess if all the subjects are at the same distance, all in line, the result won't be that bad.

well I tried with a bunch of people, and nothing was blurred out. I'm going to guess that it doesn't work with a bunch of people only with a few people. Thanks for the support

That's an interesting question. It definitely should work with small groups (2 or 3 people). It's possible that with a big group, you have to stand back too far (to include everyone in the shot) that it messes up the Portrait Mode algorithms.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I mean this afternoon I was taking a group of people like 10 people or so. I stepped back to make it a wide angle shot so to speak. However, when I had my camera in portrait mode, I didn't get the blur effect. So of course, the picture just came out looking normal That's why I wanted to ask a question. I understand two or three people portrait mode will be beautiful on the front or rear cameras, but when you have a group of people like 8 or 10 or so in a shot that's when things get interesting. Mhmm
