Possible battery drain workaround...

It seems like we have a workaround for the battery drain issue. At least something that fixed my phone's drain issues so far (and a couple of other people), and i want to see if the results can be duplicated.

The DRM seemed to have solved some people's battery issues while a lot of people verified their phone still wasn't sleeping regardless of DRM, like myself.

Well, since switching the WiFi sleep to "Never" around 4pm yesterday, my phone has been sleeping as it should, running at around 11-15% awake time which is normal, as opposed to 100% awake time prior to adjusting the WiFi settings..

So the 2 steps involved are:

1) Stopping DRM in your running services (must do this every time you reboot)

2) Setting your WiFi Sleep Policy to "Never" under advanced settings

It also seems as though the new update, whenever we get it, solves the WiFi issue, but until then i think this may work for everyone.

Let me know if this helps and works.

You can check your sleep/awake time via Spare Parts' battery history. The running % is the % of time your phone is awake. You can also click that and it will tell you how much time your phone has gone without sleeping.

An "anyone have success with this?" bump

I did it, but it was suggested today so I have to give it a day or two to see what happens.

I have:
1. Killed DRM
2. Kill MediaHub
3. Airplane mode Toggle
and now
4. WiFi sleep mode.

I get great battery life if I keep the phone off until after work. J/K lasted 15 hours yesterday with moderate to heavy use.

That's great to hear.

I'm almost 24 hours into using these settings and my phone has yet to kick into 100% awake mode, which is what happened constantly since the update.

Yes, I was already doing that (setting WiFi sleep Policy to "Never" under advanced settings). Combined with the other workarounds (stopping DRM, Sprint hotspot services, and the airplane-mode toggle) I have battery performance that is tolerable.

Good battery maintenance obviously requires vigilance in several areas, because there can be multiple causes of battery drain.

Thanks, I actually took phone to Sprint, and had battery tested. I had a bad battery. Thye are ordering me a new one. So if these options improves but still not too good, def, take it to Sprint.

WOW, I have never had battery success like this... In one hour I have literally not lost 1% of my battery.

UNREAL! I saw this thread last night and changed my WIFI to "never sleep". This is the only variable change.

My Juiceplotter battery-use line has NEVER been flatlined, EVER. Looking at the long, green line stretching horizontally across the screen is like, amazing... LOL

Glad to hear!

lol i was wondering why my phone wasn't having the sleep problems of everyone else. i did this along time ago by following one of the how to threads in another section

Wow, i guess this along with people just never using WiFi would explain why some people never had this problem.

Where is this setting at to turn on never sleep?

Go to Settings, Wireless & Networks, WiFi settings, Menu Button, Advanced, WiFi Sleep Policy, Never

With this fix and the new update, my Epic has been off the charger for 18 hours and i'm currently at 30% with my normal usage.

Ok I have a few questions, I think there is a glitch on the EPIC, when I have wifi on and am in a place where this is no wifi, the phone doesn't automatically switch to 3g, is this normal? Also whats the difference in doing the never sleep? how do i turn off drm?

For the DRM, hit menu>Settings>Applications>Running Services You will see DRM under that, tap to stop the process. Sorry, can't help you with the other Questions.

Thanks for such a quick reply, how does drm running take up more battery? I also stopped Gtalk while i was in there and a few other things

I don't think your supposed to stop Gtalk, read that somewhere. Supposedly the phone uses it for something and that it will idle by itself and really not cause drain. I do not know for sure. Its not a big deal either way, anything you turn off will be running again after a restart, including DRM.

Thanks for the info. I use to charge my phone every night, but with these changes my phone is still almost full without charging it last night.

This is fantastic.

Hopefully this is not a dumb question, but is setting the WiFi to "never sleep" only helps when you are actually on WiFi or all the time? I usually don't have WiFi on when I am out of the house, so would this help then or only when I'm in the WiFi area with it On?

This setting only helps when you are actually connected to WiFi. It makes sense to leave the "never sleep" setting on permanently, and toggle off the whole WiFi radio from the notification bar when away from your WiFi router or hotspot.
