So I may have stumbled onto the root cause of the USB problems, or at least a major contributing factor.
I planned on giving the new ED01 a try, and was following Adrenalyn's instructions on returning to DL09, upgrading to EA28 and finally to ED01. Well, as luck wouldn't have it, I ended up stuck at step one - Odin'ing the full, stock, DL09 package.
I kept removing and reinstalling the drivers, I tried it on multiple computers, but the phone was continually displayed as the dreaded "unknown USB device". During this process, I noticed something strange - even when my phone wasn't connected to the USB cable, the cable itself was recognized by Windows as an unknown USB device. I thought that was really strange, as I've never had a bare cable recognized as anything before. I plugged the cable into my wife's laptop, and same thing - unknown USB device.
I then tried my wife's USB cable (which has barely been used, since we usually just share mine). Plugged it in, and nothing... just like it should be. Connected my phone in download mode, and it was instantly recognized and Odin was able to flash without any issues.
So, for those still having connection issues, try connecting just your cable to your computer and see what happens. Open up device manager and see if it shows up as an unknown USB device. If it does, that may very well be the problem. If you have an alternate cable, give it a try.
Not sure this is the answer for everyone, but it appears to have been my issue. Would be real nice if we could get to the bottom of this for once and for all.
