Possible to receive an old message again months later?

Hi, have many people experienced receiving an old message again several months after original was received? Today i received a message which apparently the sender had not sent, i checked previous messages and found two messages which were the same from several months ago. Is this possible and is it common as I have never had this before with WhatsApp.
