Possibly not as interested anymore

I have been really excited and looking forward to the Nexus 5 coming out. It looks great in my opinion and I prefer the pure android experience over a skinned OEM version. However, there is one thing that is making me possibly not as interested anymore. That thing is battery life. Based on leaks, it appears that the internals are pretty much the same as the LG G2 (e.g., same processor and memory) except for the battery, camera, and screen is slightly larger on LG G2.

What concerns me with battery life is that the reviews I have read for the LG G2 say that the battery life is good and can get you through a full day with a good amount of usage. That is with a 3000 mah battery. Can the battery life for the Nexus 5 be anywhere close to that with a 2300 mah battery because of .2 inches less screen and it is not skinned? I don't know. It just doesn't seem to me like 700 mah can be made up by the lack of LG's skin.

If you have any good logic on this, please let me know. I haven't been this excited for a phone in awhile but I am not going for it if the battery is not good enough to get me at least 4 hours screen time in one day.

I think it will turn out to be complete BS, but you could always put some faith in the rumor the 32gb version will have the larger battery.

Wait until you see reviews with real hands on, and real world usages before you pas judgement, Then if it doesnt do it for you, move on, and find another smartphone for yourself.

From what we learned from the GPE One and S4 that stock vs skinned doesn't make a significant change in battery life when running close to stock android. So comparing the difference in software between the lg g2 and nexus 5 won't determine battery life nor will the dismal change in screen size. LG G2 comes in two battery sizes the 3000mah and 2600mah. The 2600mah version battery life is lower than the 3000mah version so I would assume the 2300mah Nexus won't be better than either two. Some would compare the Moto X to the Nexus 5 but that comparing apples to oranges. The Moto X screen resolution and type are optimized to be efficient for battery life. Furthermore more processor and software was built to be more efficient specific to the Moto X. The Nexus 5 does not have specific tech the Moto X has for battery life so comparing with because share same then battery is illogical in terms in comparing battery life.

Then Nexus 5 battery life is going to be in between the HTC One and S4 IMO. Google and lg would have do some revolutionary tweeks to current tech in Nexus 5 to get over 3 hours screen time and last a full day which I doubt. Technologies only fix for battery life is a bigger battery for now.

Battery life can be extremely variable based on usage and where you live. If you live in an area with poor coverage, you're going to get poor battery life as the phone works harder to maintain signal. If you keep your brightness turned all the way up, that can burn up battery life. If you constantly turn on the screen to check for notifications and things, that can burn up battery life. If you run alot of apps that sync or play some intensive games, the battery can die quicker. You see kind of where I'm going here, usage and area can mean a big difference in battery life when you add it all up.

Let's also not forget that we're dealing with a new version of Android that, from what we have been led to understand, is meant to work on a wider range of lower grade hardware. We can presume without any evidence beyond those words that battery life may be improved, especially if the leaks about it using the 3.10 kernel turn out to be true. Is it going to be worlds better battery life? Doubtful, but based on your usage, it might be enough of a difference.

At the end of the day, there's far too many variables for anyone to give you a solid answer. Your best bet is to wait for release in (presumably if @evleaks is indeed correct) a few days and read reviews on it afterwords to see what people are saying, then make an educated decision based on what you know in regards to how you use your device.

Wait for your most trusted reviewer to test the battery life.

I too have been underwhelmed with the leaks, and coming from the nexus 4 with its abysmal battery life I just can't do it anymore. I want to use my phone not turn everything off just to be able to make it through daylight hours. I gave up and got a note 3, and the difference is great. I'm routinely getting 4-5 hours screen time with this phone (never got better than 2-3 on nexus 4) with 30-35% left when I plug in at night.

I also decided to pass on the Nexus 5 and went with the Note 3. I made the mistake last year in giving up my Note 2 to get the Nexus 4. Not saying that the Nexus 4 was a disappointment or that the N5 will be. But I do remember regretting get that I gave up the Note 2 because it was a better phone. It had a larger screen, bigger battery, more accessories available, LTE, micro SD card slot, better processor, better camera, and of course, the S-pen. This year, I see that there are many of the same differences with the exception of the processor and and LTE. I know that price factors in. If you are looking at getting an inexpensive smartphone, the Nexus is the best of the bunch. But the Note 3 is simply better in my opinion.

You should wait several weeks before trying to get one.

That will increase my odds of getting one at launch! Lol!

Was the battery life really that poor in the N4? It seems to me they heard about that and would try to fix that in the 5.

Not sure but I think the lg phone I have is similar in specs to the 4 (lg Optimus f7) and I get way more than 4 hours screen time. My standby is longer than 12 hours and that's with some use. If I use the phone without interruption I get about 6 hours screen time. So I think the battery on the 5 should be at least comparable to that.

I was honestly thinking this same thing just an hour ago. I'm on a Galaxy Nexus now and the battery life is so unbelievable bad. When I heard the rumour of a 3000 mAh battery in the Nexus 5 I was really excited but obviously that's not happening. Just about every day by the time I get home my GNex is almost dead, and I work a 9-2 day usually. I use my phone for about half an hour in the mornings and after that I'm at 80% and the phone stays in my pocket the majority of the work day. I'll turn off data usually until I need it again and occasionally I'll turn my brightness down (its usually on auto). Today when I was done work at 3 I had 20% left, turned my brightness ALL THE WAY down, used my phone for a couple min bringing it down to 14%, put it away, checked it five minutes later and I'm at 5%. The battery on the GNex is absolute garbage and I haven't heard much better about the Nexus 4. A phone is basically unusable if it can't make it through a full day. The Nexus 5 better be A LOT better or I may get off the Nexus bandwagon. Shame something so simple and easily fixed has to ruin my experience. Sorry guys, just had to vent.

After hearing all the talk of the poor battery I'm really having second thoughts about moving to the N5 from the Note 2.

I had both versions of the Gnex (the GSM & CDMA). The GSM version actually got better battery life with a smaller battery. It may be because it didn't have LTE. I could always get through the day on my Nexus 4 but I don't think I use my phone a much as some of you. I just installed CM 10.2 on my G2 and it's very nice. It's making the wait for the N5 go a little better.

A lot of you are making assumptions about the battery & camera before this phone is even released. I'm not saying these things will be good or bad, but I would atleast wait until the device is released and some reviews are done on it.

Coming from a Note 2 with a hefty sized battery this will make or break my decision whether I buy this phone or not. Plus LTE is a power hog and I don't think this battery is going to cut it.
Just gotta wait for the reviews.

Depends on what you deem is bloatware.

apps that carriers and or OEM's put on your phone and do not allow you to delete. AT&T and Samsung are prime examples. My recent moto X was surprising free of bloat. Only like three apps from ATT.

I used to hate people who say the following, but I've come to see the light!

Franco's kernel, Greenify and a sensible screen brightness routine make this an all day phone.

My GSM galaxy nexus had great battery life. My nexus 4 battery was a joke. Multiple charges during the day if I actually tried using it. This note 3 is much better

Well, I normally get about a day out of my N4 on one charge, maybe a little more than that, but if I run apps that are constantly doing push/pull (like Facebook, FB Messenger, etc.) then that drops to more like 6-8 hours of runtime.

Signal strength varies widely, however.
