I am considering making a move from the Pre to Evo or maybe just adding another line to my plan to get the EVO.

I cant imagine leaving WebOS and the active community of preware

1)Do you regret your decision to leave pre for the Evo?

2)What are some of the major improvements with evo compared to pre?

3) what are some of the major problems with evo compared to pre?

4)Andriod vs WebOS? Who wins and why?

5)How is the Google Voice app..I heard google andriod phones run Google voice as good as if its a second line on your phone. I used my google voice line for a work based voicemail and being about to answer it on my cell in a smooth fashion(without having to hit 1 to accept everytime) would be great!

Thanks all!

1)Do you regret your decision to leave pre for the Evo?

No... I loved my Pre and influenced others to get it, and my wife still has it.

2)What are some of the major improvements with evo compared to pre?

Speed... I personally like the UI over the Pre

3) what are some of the major problems with evo compared to pre?

I loved the notifications system on the Pre... As well as the Live scores notifications I would get on my Hockey Sports live app.. Haven't found anything like that yet... But I haven't looked since hockey season is now over.

4)Android vs WebOS? Who wins and why?
Android... Momentum has shifted. There are a lot of things I can do now on the Evo that I wished I could on the Pre... The Pre will get more functionality later... hopefully, but I've always been a Google fan, and having all of this Google integration has been GREAT!!

I haven't tested outgoing calls, but the Voicemail has been great! It gives you the text transcription as well as a play button that you can listen to either by speakerphone, or earpiece. I remember having to listen to my voicemails over speakerphone on the Pre.... Not sure if that was ever fixed!
Thanks all!
You're Welcome :D

I hope that helps out a bit... I was a diehard Palm Pre fan... Still am, and I hope the WebOS gets updated with the things that were promised in the past. I still have mine as a backup.

Another note worth mentioning is that on the Pre I bought a lot of apps and games... Thus far, I've only bought one... Because the rest were free. The only thing I have not went and bought yet are games.

Are you from WV? What area? I'm currently in Mount Hope (near Beckley)

While I really like WebOS, and I really wanted it to do well, I switched to the EVO.

1) I don't regret it in the slightest, it was the right time to move android has multi-touch, I don't believe it did when I got my pre.
the EVO is just much faster and smoother.

Once you break yourself of the card metophore the HTC sense and Android UI, is very good.

the only thing that I wish Android did better, that the Pre had was synergy. WebOS was very good and merging and deduplicating contacts automatically, Adroid I find multiple instances of the same contact with link suggestions within each contact. Not horrilbe just not as automated as WebOS

Andoroid had more and better applications, the voice search is great.

I don't really use google voice.

Unless HP really gets its act together I don't see going back any time soon.

Yes, Parkersburg but havnt lived there since 2002. Graduated from WVU in 2006 and now live in SC. I am in WV quite a bit though..I have to travel to Huntington, Charleston, Morgantown for work. Also go back for all the football games!

No regrets after spending years with Palm. Although I have only had the EVO for 3 days, I can say that I will be keeping the phone. the only thing I miss about the Pre is the size when carrying it. But, when I am using the EVO, I enjoy its size better if that makes sense. Also, widgets > cards. I think maybe the Pre has a better notification system, but maybe this is something that can be improved on the EVO.

Happy EVO customer here.

I wanted to reply to you, but ptath2 pretty much summed up my opinion. Love Web OS..but all you really miss is the cards, once you get over it you dont look back.

Google voice is awesome - works fluently on Android. If you have any particular questions dont hestitate to pm me.

GL HF!

I liked (not loved) my Pre...I waited for it anxiously, got it at launch, oohed and ahed over it for a few days and never had any REAL problems with the phone. I did however long for a bigger and better screen, I had previously had an iphone so that was a change. The app store was depressingly barren but again I got the first gen iphone so I lived without apps for a long time. Then the hardware issues started...nothing major but the little door over my charge port broke off...actually this was a blessing in disguise because it was a lot more convenient to not have to pry that booger out with my nail every time. That was annoying and I'm a GIRL...with nails. The screen got scratched up despite my careful handling and case. The screen would occasionally black out, calls were static-y and sometimes callers couldn't hear me. Anyway, this was all in just a year. Who know what kind of issues I'll have with my Evo in a year. Overall I'm enjoying the switch, the hardware seems SOOOO much better, higher quality. The UI is, I know this isn't the technical term, prettier. I'm still learning my way around though. My number one complaint/issue is trying to understand the not closing apps thing. Of course my mind wants to close, x out, swipe something to end it but supposedly you don't have to do any of that in Android. But if you don't why do SOME apps have "quit" options, like Slacker? It confuses me and I miss just being able to swipe an app away and not have to worry about is my phone going to die in my bag because I didn't really "close" something.

1)Do you regret your decision to leave pre for the Evo?

Not even close. Think about it this way. The pre community with webos internals made the Pre what it was for me. It was awesome and vibrant, and we tore that phone down to its bones and built it back up again. Webos was great, and I still recommend it to people (as does my wife, who doesn't plan on upgrading anytime soon). Android has that community, plus the benefit of being a much bigger platform, it's just not all on one forum/place. The Evo kind of opened my eyes as to what I was missing by naysaying android for the past year.

That said, it's easy to sign onto Android at 2.1, and not have had to suffer through the earlier builds over the past 12 months/worry about not getting the updates.

2)What are some of the major improvements with evo compared to pre?

customization - there are just more options for how to organize your apps and data. Having information on my homescreen without having to open an app to see the weather is a huge plus for me, and something I really missed with the Pre.

apps - there are more, and they do more things. Android has the apis for the microphone and camera that the pre still lacks, so there are apps like barcode scanners, shazam, etc... that people were begging for with the pre.

speed/hardware - it's just better. Palm really should've done a mid-cycle launch of the pre plus on sprint. The Palm devotees who raced to sprint on launch day, really got hosed by getting the slowest most flawed pre released, but this thing really screams. Playing Nova on this (especially with the bigger screen) vs. the Pre, is so much more fun. This is a better device for gaming and media consumption.

3) what are some of the major problems with evo compared to pre?

consistency - on the pre, interfaces were well organized and consistent. Palm did a great job at instilling it's developers with a sense of webos' design and UI to keep things running the same throughout the os and apps. Android is more like a pc OS where different apps will have totally different UI elements.

gestures - I still catch myself swiping up from below the evo's screen to minimize a program. Once you get used to long-pressing the home button to switch between apps android ends up as nimble at multitasking as the pre, but the gesture area on the pre was truly unique, and I'll miss it.

size - I love the screen, and typing is a breeze, but the Pre was a perfect little pebble in my hand. This thing is prone to being dropped if you hold it carelessly.

4)Andriod vs WebOS? Who wins and why?

I kind of answered this above, but Android is simply more mature. It's not webos' fault, Android had a year's jump on it, and it's only gotten really robust in the last months since version 2. At this point, it has a great notification system, tons of customization, the ability to get under the hood, and a lot more developer support.

WebOS could still catch up, and if webos is on every printer, tablet, phone, and toaster HP puts out, it will definitely attract some developer attention, but right now, there's just no contest. Android is winning hands down.

5)How is the Google Voice app..I heard google andriod phones run Google voice as good as if its a second line on your phone. I used my google voice line for a work based voicemail and being about to answer it on my cell in a smooth fashion(without having to hit 1 to accept everytime) would be great!

I love it. phone calls, text messages, sent to gv are integrated into your notifications, and unless you look closely, you don't even realize it's the gv "app" feeding you that information, it just feels like part of the phone.

I thought I'd hate the OS, but I am actually growing to like it. The customization options are great without having to hassle with homebrew or rooting.

I would recommend you try the Dolphin HD browser. It has nice tabbed browsing, whereas the stock browser has an awful interface for multiple windows.

Coming from the Pre....you will never look back.

Pros:
Screen size
Touch screen response
Speed, speed, speed
Battery life
Customization
Awesome hardware quality
No moving parts (except kick stand)
Huge keyboard

Cons:
Multitasking not as smooth
Notification system not a good
Size/weight...but I already got used to it.
$10 EVO tax

Those are my thoughts since the change last Friday.

Geez, you must get to travel a lot!! Hook me up with a job!!
I have a lot of friends that went to high schools in the Parkersburg area.

I love my pre. I convinced my self I was not getting the EVO, cause I really did not need it. I have always had my pre hacked etc.. so while I was convincing myself that I did not need the EVO, i bricked my pre. To be honest... I am sure I can recover from it. I installed two kernals at the same time without realizing it. This of course was enough reason to go get an evo, becasue if i was going to have to dr. my phone and spen all that time putting all settings and stuff in , well I might as well do that on a new phone.
The EVO takes some getting use to. things are not placed in as obvious a place as I would like, yes the habit swiping is a pain to get over. the battery sucks. but so did the stock palm pre. I upgraded to seido 2600 and was thrilled with the battery life. I think the EVO lasts longer for my first day with it that the pre did. however the evo does not have a solution to forced roam, there is no unified inbox, at least with the stock program and the notifications need some work. having said all that, I am not going back to the pre. There are too many cool programs for this phone, the screen is fantastic, the camera is awesome, the build quality is solid and ....I am tired of the drama of having a palm. I hope that helps!

I am patiently waiting until tomorrow to get my EVO. I already have my Pre on eBay. I thought for old time sakes, I would go to PalmCentral one last time. Its just another reason why I am glad I am making the switch.

Sprint CFO really not fond of Pre, apparently
By Dieter Bohn

We've been warning webOS and Sprint faithful for some time now that the company is smitten with the EVO 4G and doesn't really have the time for its other children.
That trend continues today as Sprint CFO Robert Brust cast some not-so-subtle aspersions on the Pre at a New York investor conference:
"The Pre was for people who didn't really want the iPhone," he said. "But the EVO is a phone that people can get instead of the iPhone. We were in the distance last year and now we're catching up."

My situation is a little different than most... I actually have both a Pre and an Evo, on separate lines (thank the heavens for Google Voice!). While I love my Evo, I still love my Pre, and if you want either one, you'll have to pry it from my cold, dead fingers!

I find myself carrying and using my Evo a lot more than my Pre. I love the speed, the screen, and surprisingly the Evo's battery life is actually better than the Pre's. You get used to the differences in Android's interface. Holding the Home button brings up a list of your last 6 apps (even if you closed them), which makes the lack of cards acceptable.

Using the Pre after the Evo makes it seem laughably small, like a toy. However, it's still a much more enjoyable experience for me.

I think the most succinct way of putting it is this: Android is a power OS, while webOS is a more polished (in terms of GUI) and charming OS.

All I can say is get the phone and try it out for a couple hours.
The first few may be trying buys after that there's no going back.
The Evo is that good!

Everyone has pretty much covered what I'd say, so I'll just say that the ability to click a link in an email and not have to worry about getting the Too Many Cards error when the only thing you had open was email made the change worth it.

1. No regrets. Like you're doing now, I researched and read up on the evo and android before I jumped in--so I knew what I was getting into.

2. Improvements: better hardware (feels better in the hand and, of course, is much faster), more useful free apps, no too many open card errors.

3. Major problems: I don't think it's major, but you do have to dig around to find certain settings--it's just not as intuitive as webOS.

4. Android vs webOS: I think they're both good. I think webOS is more intuitive and once you get used to gestures it's kind of hard not to try and swipe everything away once you're done. Android has gotten more polished and it's a powerful OS that is continually moving forward. And, now that the designer of webOS has jumped ship to work on Android, well, l can only imagine it will continue to get better.

I am about to ditch my Pre for the EVO If Best Buy would ever get more in stock...

My main reason for deciding to switch is that while WebOS has so much potential to be the best phone OS, the lack of customization (whether its internal or app) is frustrating to me. The Pre and OS is hobbled and I cant wait any longer for them to fix it.

My specific complaints about PRE...
  • Handset volume is too low and there is NOT one app to fix this!!
  • No on-phone mp3, photo, or video editing
  • after one year the app catalog has 2500 apps (approx 500 are sports team specific apps that should have a category not count as individual) over 100 books that are >99 ea. and over 100 person specific quotes WTF???
  • The UI is Ssooooooo SSSSLLOOOOOWWWWWWW (Like 10 sec to open calendar sometimes...
  • rebooting the phone takes like 3 minutes
  • you have to reboot the phone to play some games :(
  • useless button that palm will not open the API to so we can get more use from it.
  • its been a year and still the SDK and PDK's are Hobbled
These things and others have finally tipped the scales for me regardless of the elegant card metaphor, notification UI, and physical keyboard.

I am a techie and love complicated things (not that Android is overly complicated), its just that I hate being constrained (its what I hate about Apple products)

ultimately, Palm has made me wait too long for too little... I cant wait to get my evo!!!!

Mike
