With Verizon offering more data for prepaid plans, I'd love to get on board. However, it seems you need to activate a new device. Is there a way to do this without having to pay for a new phone?

You can bring your own phone as long as it is supported Verizon prepaid. You can go to Verizon's website and see which phones the carrier will allow for prepaid service and instead of buying or leasing one from Verizon , you can prob find one cheap on swappa, ebay, or even your local craigslist.

Sorry, to clarify I'm already on Verizon's prepaid plan. Can I buy a cheapy of ebay, activate it, and keep my current phone (and phone number)?

Yes you can provided that your phone is compatible with your plan.

Should have posted this on this thread instead, here it is again:

Note: CS will insist that the extra data is only for new customers.

Go to your My Verizon account on a desktop computer. Go to Plan and Data. If it offers the new 2 GB/$45 plan (before the 1 GB auto pay bonus) and says that the current plan is no longer valid, tell that to the CS rep. They can go into your My Verizon and see that.

Well, at least that worked for me. She had to do some adjustment. My plan will renew tonight with the usual 1 GB/1 GB auto pay bonus. She says that the extra 1 GB will be added in "three business days" and it'll be 2/1 ongoing after that.

We'll see if this all actually happens.
