So, S10 is ordered.

I need to get my S9 backed up and ready for sale.

How is everyone preparing and what do I need to do?

Cheers

Paul

I keep stuff I want on an SD card, so I just move that from phone to phone.

Everything else, Google backs up. When I turn on a new phone and enter my credentials, it just starts coming down to the phone. I just let it re-download all my apps, and then all my custom ringtones and whatnot are there. Then it's time to set up my groups, my one-touch text and phone widgets, and my home screens.

To that end I've simply taken screen shots of everything and stuck them away. I'll be able to re-arrange everything to my liking on the new phone.

And of course, my SD card will be there with everything I need.

Oh--and I also use SMS Backup and Restore to backup texts and phone calls. I then restore those to the new phone. That won't work when RCS lights up, by the way.

Can you just take out the SD card you've been using on phone #1 and pop it into your new phone? Is it that simple?

Smart Switch will be your best friend. Just plug the new one into your old one when prompted to, and your all set.

But seriously, you should be backing up your device daily, or at the minimum weekly. Samsung Cloud does this automatically. I do use Google backup too, but just for Google's Services.

Smart Switch is the easiest way, never had a problem with it not bringing everything over. The only items I've had to manually back up are Secret Safe (a password app) and Nova Launcher settings this is due to it being app data.

I always like to start fresh with a new phone. I only let google put my contacts on. It's a chance to find other versions of commonly used apps and not bother reinstalling those I haven't used much. I always keep my old phone so I can just copy setting across.

I seem to have an issue with Google photos backing up everything. I have to move all photos that are not in the main "Camera" folder to that it in order for the photos to show as backed up in google photos.

As someone who uses JOD to upgrade every six months, I've got this down to a pretty regimented process:

1. Back up both my phone and watch on Samsung Cloud
2. DECRYPT MY SD CARD - very important not to forget this step!
3. Use Smart Switch to move everything over to the new phone with a cable (the cloud backup is just a contingency for the phone, but the watch data won't transfer over via the cable)
4. Re-encrypt my SD card
5. Take the phone to the store, wipe it in front of a rep, and turn it in.

I generally just use my nightly samsung cloud back up and restore it on my new phone. Smart switch works as well, but sometimes you have to run it twice because it can miss things the first time.

Where do you get the Samsung cloud? Is it an app in the Play Store?
It's in the settings menu. I have a S7 Edge and it shows up under 'Cloud and accounts'. You'll need to have signed in with your Samsung account ID.

Why not use Smart Switch to back up to the SD card? On an S9+ with a Samsung Evo Select card, it didn't take long for me (6 minutes for a complete backup of 6.6 GB).

I just bought a new 256 card I am saving for the new phone. I will put some of my pictures and I have a folder of special ring and text tones I keep on the card that is it I usually just back up on the phone and when I restore on new phone everything comes back my home screens with folders and everything came back from the Note 8 to the 9 plus I didn't even have to screen shot my screens. I also kind of like to start fresh but I'll just uninstall apps I rarely use. Also how do you get your wifi passwords to stay. I've had them all come back and once before I would go somewhere with a locked wifi and have to re enter it and they didn't come back. So is backing up to Samsung cloud one thing and then you back up google also to keep your contacts and stuff?

Making sure you have all device albums you want backed up selected to back up.

Open Google Photos > hamburger menu in top left > settings > backup & sync > backup device folders. Make sure all albums you want backed up are ticked.

Yes I checked off the ones that is shows, but on Google Photos it doesn't show all of the folders. That's why I have to move everything to one of the others and it seems to work out ok.
