Nice find. Based on that I am willing to bet that the only way this is getting resolved is if everyone is on a 4G phone and they do away with the old authentication system they are using. My prediction for this would be 2020.

This was talked about before. This part is what I try to get ppl to focus on:

The severity of the problem can depend on your device. Some devices are more likely to re-attempt authentication immediately, and ten or fifteen seconds later, you're good to go. Some won't - and have to be forced to re-authenticate by switching in and out of airplane mode. Some won't even respond to that, and have to be powered on and off. Our speculation in regards to the varying severity is that it more than likely depends on how aggressive the phone's battery conservation software is. If a device loses connection, it may think it's in a "fringe" coverage zone and stop attempting to reconnect to the network to avoid wasting battery. It could also be that the device's software is just poorly written to deal with such regular failed attempts to get network authentication.

I had a G Nex, have a RAZR and Rezound. And all 3 have, had data issues. The difference is the severity with all 3.

My Rezound right now needs to be rebooted cuz it gets stuck in 1x in weak areas. My G Nex never saw 4G or saw it very lil in weak areas.

My RAZR....has been the least annoying of the 3. I say least annoying because again they all had, have data issues. My RAZR recently has been getting stuck in 3G and a data or airplane toggle fixes it.

I dont believe its ICS....since all 3 had issues. I think its either hardware or radio software related. The radio software for the G Nex comes form Samsung. And to be honest...I dont know know what was worse...my Rezound getting stuck in 1x or my G Nex and 4G. If they offer my a G Nex for my Rezound I might just take it.

I saw 4G the most times with my RAZR and it was easier to recover from data issues vs the other 2. By the time LTE network and LTE hardware gets better.....all 3 phones will be old news anyway...lol. My Rezound might get better with a new phone or SIM card. When it launched it did have the best 4G reception. After RAZR updates....it didnt.

Weird, but I either don't notice this problem or it's infrequent enough not for me to notice it. My connection to LTE service with the GNex is predictable where I live and travel. There are dead zones where I get no data connection, then just 3G, but it always seems to bounce back to LTE when I'm in range. And as long as I'm in range, I don't notice data dropping out randomly. Not to say it isn't an issue. If I was seeing this, I'd yell bloody murder.

I've always been suspicious of the complexity of Verizon's LTE implementation. AT&T's LTE roll out involves transitioning from GSM technology to GSM technology. Verizon's has to be more complicated given its legacy CDMA network and that LTE is GSM-based. Given that Verizon is only using it's LTE network for data right now, what Android Police are saying seems to make sense or else everyone would drop voice and data when they can't authenticate.
